This is indeed a huge accolade for the state and the nation, no doubt about that. However, organic agriculture and organic production systems have their own local, regional and global challenges and it is important that we understand that in depth. One of the most formidable challenges regarding organic production is numerous misinformation and lack of education and awareness among the target consumers that is acting against the successful establishment of the organic market worldwide in spite of the huge economic potential it carries. But this poison free myth associated with organic production has been its biggest USP for attracting customers who are ready to pay extra for food safety and security. Lack of appropriate certification and stringent monitoring of pure organic production is lacking around the globe and there have been numerous reports of abuse of certification and non-organic products either intentionally or non-intentionally being falsely identified as organic thereby cheating innocent customers for higher profit margin by a section of dishonest producers, retailers and distributors. Hence for the long term sustainability of the organic industry; organic and local must walk side by side to cut down transportation cost and avoid using any feed source that may have chemicals in it defeating the total purpose of the organic production system. Only locally produced organic animal feed can help the growth and development of the local organic livestock, dairy and meat industries.

Cost of organic production to compete with the production level of non-organic or traditional chemical based agricultural production systems is often comparably high. This higher cost often restricts organic products to be accessible to a large section of customers who could not afford to pay the higher pricing associated with it.

(To be concluded)

Saikat Kumar Basu, Apt 6-409, 43 Street South, Lethbridge AB Canada T1J 4B3

The organic livestock production is still in its infancy and the cost of organic feed is often comparably higher than conventional feed increasing production cost several folds for organic livestock producers. Often the transpiration cost of feed from one part of the country to another is also hugely taxing on the producers to that extent that many were forced to leave the organic trade and switched back to traditional production system for their bare survival. The price of organic feed grain is intimately associated with the price of non-organic grain and is also short in demand. Therefore, as the non-organic grain prices go up, many organic farmers loose interest in organic grain production. Many consumers appreciate and are even ready to pay higher prices for local, nature-based and pasture raised meat than organic meat due to lack of proper advertisement and active consumer awareness initiatives of the local organic production industry. Some consumers put higher priority for animal welfare with strong support for antibiotics and/or hormones free production system than certified organic. It is also important to note that the production cost for conventional meat production is comparatively cheaper than the organic alternative posing further threats to the organic industry.

A recent study in North America published in the Frontiers in Nutrition has found that diets rich in fruit and vegetables is environmentally sustainable than those rich in animal products. This study also highlighted that organic food provides significant climate benefits for the plant-based diets compared to those with low or moderate amount of plant products. Thus organic products have huge health and environmental benefits that are not being appropriately highlighted by the concerned industry. The BIG challenge for organic production system ultimately is winning the long term consumer confidence and it is time that efforts on these realm needs to be accelerated to deal with the ground realities.

["post-178483","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard
["GET
