{"id":180582,"date":"2013-09-28T01:07:55","date_gmt":"2013-09-28T01:07:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/151.106.38.4\/2013\/09\/28\/abundant-water-in-mars\/"},"modified":"2013-09-28T01:07:55","modified_gmt":"2013-09-28T01:07:55","slug":"abundant-water-in-mars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nagalandpost.net\/index.php\/2013\/09\/28\/abundant-water-in-mars\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Abundant\u2019 water in Mars"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img src=\/old_site\/TZPFNDSIGCMSXBPKFNUX.jpg>First scoop of soil analyzed by the Curiosity rover reveals that fine materials on the Martian surface may contain \u201cabundant\u201d water, Xinhua reported Thursday citing US researchers. <\/p>\n<p>Curiosity touched down Mars last August and began its 100-day mission of collecting and analyzing samples of all kinds in Gale crater, which is near the Martian equator, with its high-tech lasers and scoops.<\/p>\n<p>In this study, researchers from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute used the rover\u2019s scoop to collect dust, dirt and finely grained soil from a sandy patch known as \u201cRocknest\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers then fed portions of the fifth scoop into an instrument onboard Curiosity called the Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) to heat them to 835 degrees Celsius.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the most exciting results from this very first solid sample ingested by Curiosity is the high percentage of water in the soil,\u201d said lead author Laurie Leshin, dean of science at the institute. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout two percent of the soil on the surface of Mars is made up of water, which is a great resource, and interesting scientifically,\u201d Leshin said.<\/p>\n<p>The sample also released significant carbon dioxide, oxygen, and sulfur compounds when heated, the researchers reported in the journal Science.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>First scoop of soil analyzed by the Curiosity rover reveals that fine materials on the Martian surface may contain \u201cabundant\u201d water, Xinhua reported Thursday citing US researchers.
