Therie has called upon party workers to fight elections on issues and not by bribing voters.

He was speaking at the Nagaland Pradesh Mahila Congress Committee (NPMCC) mahila congress flag installation program at Congress Bhavan, Dimapur on September 15.

A press release from Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee media cell reported that in his speech, K. Therie also said Nagaland faces a major crisis because despite women voters accounting for more than 50% of the electorate, women candidates were still unable to get elected. Drawing examples from women leaders across the world, Therie said Nagaland women were second to none and were capable of representing the people in all fields of life.

On corruption, Therie said the political fight against corrupt money seemed impossible as corruption was too deep rooted in the people in power while law and order had become a thing of the past.

Therie said it was not impossible to build a united front to achieve the goals that elude us today adding that the Congress party was committed to finding a solution to ease the burden of the people.

Taking a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Therie said if Modi heard his own promises to the nation before becoming the Prime Minister, he would not vote for himself in the coming Lok Sabha Elections. Elucidating on the present national scenario, he said India was capable of making a strong decision which will determine the ruling Government at the centre. Stating that the future was very dark for the government, he exuded confidence that the Congress party was on the way to forming the Central Government.

On the ensuing 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Therie said that the people should elect their MPs from a national political party to be able to have a voice in the Parliament because Regional MPs are barely given one to two minutes to speak making it impossible to raise their voice for their people. He maintained that an MP should be part of a parliamentary group to have a voice in the Parliament and said the opportunity to send such an MP was coming in the ensuing Lok Sabha elections.

N. Lucy, president, NPMCC, unfurled the mahila congress flag and presented a brief history of the Mahila Congress. She said it was during the National Convention of Mahila Congress in 1984 that a new constitution was approved and adopted to constitutionally convert the Congress Mahila Cell into an autonomous frontal organization and to name it the All India Mahila Congress (AIMC). Adding that the AIMC started functioning as an Independent Frontal Organization within the AICC in the same year, Lucy appreciated the Congress president for launching the new logo in August 2018, giving the Congress women’s wing a separate identity.

Addressing the gathering, Khegholi Aomi, AICC member, said women in the state were yet to achieve the desired level of empowerment in all fields.

She pointed out that till date Nagaland had not elected a single woman MLA and called for a change in mindset towards supporting women to become empowered, not only economically but politically.

Aomi also lamented the level of corruption which has gripped the state, and said that as Christians, the Nagas should learn to follow the guiding Christian principles.

Appreciating party loyalists present at the program, Aomi said that today, Congress was rid of opportunists and only the unwavering who believe in the principles and ideologies of the party stand out. She exuded optimism that the Congress party would return to power in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Others who spoke at the program included Jonathan Ao, general secretary, NPCC and A. Bendangyanger Jamir, Dimapur DCC president on behalf of DCC presidents. Sevi Chophy, president, AMC, Ghaspani-I invoked God’s blessings while a vote of thanks was proposed by Asanuo Chishi, general secretary, NPMC.

[679

post-180870","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","category-nagaland-news
["GET
