If bees disappeared from the earth mankind could live for only four years, said secretary for Tourism & team leader (NBHM), T. Mhabemo Yanthan.<\/span><\/div>\n
According to a press release from Neteno Yhoshu of the Directorate of Tourism, Mhabemo Yanthan was speaking during a plantation drive held at Naga Heritage Village, Kisama on June 22 organized under the theme \u201cGo Green\u201d by the Department of Tourism in collaboration with Land Resource department and Nagaland Bee and Honey Mission.<\/span><\/div>\n
According to Yanthan, more than one-third of the world crop production was dependent on the bee\u2019s pollinating service. Out of 90% food crops that feed the world population, 70% of the crops are pollinated by honeybees, he added. He lamented that today, in parts of the world where there were no bees, people were being paid to do the business of pollination by hand. So to save bees and the ecosystem as a whole, people have to play their own part by planting bee friendly flowers in public gardens, community spaces, meadows and roadsides.<\/span><\/div>\n
He also spoke about conserving natural resources due to decline in biodiversity where habitats and the food-chain had been disturbed and altered. Citing the present scenario of Nagaland he stated that the environmental impact caused due to the rampant slashing and burning of the forest cover for Agriculture and logging was alarming.<\/span><\/div>\n
He also spoke about the role and importance of bees and beekeeping in the environment. This plantation drive was one of Yanthan\u2019s first action plan after taking charge of the Tourism department.<\/span><\/div>\n
