Chrism Mass is a highlight of Holy Week, the ceremony for which was marked by Bishop James Thoppil blessing three urns of oil: oil of the catechumens, oil of the chrism and oil of the sick.

A press release from secretary to Bishop, Renthungo Victor stated that Bishop James in his homily said that the Chrism Mass is a unique gathering that has a special significance for believers, ordained priests, and the people of the local Church. On the importance of the gathering, the bishop said that it was a loud and clear proclamation to people around them that though they were different in many ways they could be united, live and work as one body. He therefore exhorted the priests and the faithful to promote oneness and unity.

The bishop asked the faithful to pray for their priests and support them at all times. Explaining the Chrism Mass further, the press release stated that two important events take place during the mass — the preparation and blessing of the Oil, and renewal of promises by the priests. The blessing and distribution of oils, is central to the Catholic Church’s sacraments and rites, it added. The Chrism Mass is traditionally associated with Holy Thursday, with the blessing of the oils taking place at a morning mass followed by an evening mass recalling Jesus’ institution of the priesthood and Eucharist at the Last Supper.

The press release went on to add that in Kohima, the holy mass was followed by a short felicitation program under the initiative of the Catholic Association of Nagaland (CAN). Keneingu Albert Rutsa, MC for the program, appreciated the priests for their dedicated service to the people of the diocese of Kohima. The highlights of the program included a choral presentation from Nagaland Catholic Youth Movement; a greeting song by Lide and Friends; words of appreciation by president CAN, Simon Dzuvichu; president of Diocesan Fraternity, Fr. Johnson VU extended words of appreciation and gratitude.

Earlier on April 15, priests gathered for a meeting and the morning of April 16 was spent in prayer and reflection, facilitated by Fr. Arul Soosai SJ, Parish Priest Phesama.

The priests will return to their own respective parishes to officiate the Holy Week celebrations, namely, the mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday, the solemn celebration of the Lord’s Passion on Good Friday, the Easter Vigil Saturday evening and Mass for Easter Day on Sunday.

[679

post-193682","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-nagaland-news
["GET
