{"id":195375,"date":"2019-02-08T12:27:38","date_gmt":"2019-02-08T12:27:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/151.106.38.4\/2019\/02\/08\/using-smartphone-for-eye-check-up-may-lead-to-misdiagnosis\/"},"modified":"2019-02-08T12:27:38","modified_gmt":"2019-02-08T12:27:38","slug":"using-smartphone-for-eye-check-up-may-lead-to-misdiagnosis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nagalandpost.net\/index.php\/2019\/02\/08\/using-smartphone-for-eye-check-up-may-lead-to-misdiagnosis\/","title":{"rendered":"Using smartphone for eye check-up may lead to misdiagnosis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img src=\/old_site\/http:\/\/new.nagalandpost.com\/cms\/gall_content\/no_images_650x.jpg><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;Using smartphones to capture photographs of patients&rsquo; eyes for check-up may lead to misdiagnosis as camera colour sensors vary and as a result, images of the same eye may appear different depending on the model of smartphone used, warn researchers.<\/p>\n<p>The study, published in the journal Scientific Reports, suggests that calibration of phone cameras is vital to capture accurate data.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Eye examinations to look for redness in the eye can indicate a variety of conditions including conjunctivitis, dry-eye disease and tear-gland dysfunction.<\/p>\n<p>Clinicians increasingly use smartphones in conjunction with ophthalmic imaging equipment, such as the eyepiece of a slit lamp, because of their portability, ease of use and relatively low cost.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The connectivity also allows for upload to the Cloud, which is useful for telemedicine &#8211; the remote diagnosis and treatment of patients using telecommunications technology &#8211; and Artificial Intelligence applications that store thousands of images from different institutions.<\/p>\n<p>However, the autofocus algorithms and hardware specifications of cameras may be different for different manufacturers which means different cameras can produce different results for the same scene.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It is important that clinicians bear this in mind,&rdquo; said lead study author Carles Otero from Anglia Ruskin University in England.<\/p>\n<p>For the study, the researchers took 192 images of eyes using three smartphone cameras, two different lighting levels and two zoom levels.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The images were duplicated and one set was white balanced and colour corrected (calibrated) and the other left unaltered.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers took photographs in autofocus mode with the iPhone 6s, the Google Nexus 6p and the Bq Aquaris U Lite, and found that the iPhone results were significantly different from the other two devices, when computing relative redness of each eye, and when compared to a clinician&rsquo;s diagnosis.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>However, when the images were calibrated, the differences between lighting levels and camera types were significantly minimalised &#8211; with differences between smartphones reduced by approximately 30 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Our results show that while the clinician&rsquo;s subjective evaluation was not affected by different cameras, lighting conditions or optical magnifications, calibration of a smartphone&rsquo;s camera is essential when extracting objective data from images,&rdquo; Otero said.<\/p>\n<p>(IANS)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Using smartphone for eye check-up may lead to misdiagnosis<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[688],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-195375","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-infotainment"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/nagalandpost.net\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/195375","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/nagalandpost.net\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/nagalandpost.net\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/nagalandpost.net\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/nagalandpost.net\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=195375"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/nagalandpost.net\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/195375\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/nagalandpost.net\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=195375"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/nagalandpost.net\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=195375"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/nagalandpost.net\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=195375"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
