A team of officers from Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB), Government of India, Mumbai inspected a few diagnostic X-ray facilities in Dimapur on September 23 and September 24, 2019, as part of special campaign planned for NE Region to create safety awareness for the public and other stake holders. AERB would also be conducting inspection in Kohima area on September 25, 2019.<\/p>\n
In a press release, AERB stated that the team, which conducted regulatory inspections of six hospitals\/clinics including a government hospital, issued warning for seal to three facilities\/units in Dimapur.<\/p>\n
The objective of AERB in the field of medical application of radiation is to protect patients, workers and public from any undue radiation hazard and ensure safe operation of the medical equipment(s) emanating X-rays.<\/p>\n
It stated that there were a large number of diagnostic X-ray machines installed and operated all over the country, but many of such equipment were operated without complying regulatory requirements. <\/p>\n
AERB said it had made various efforts by means of advertisement, awareness programme, inspection, formation of directorate of radiation safety at state level etc. However, the board observed that many X-ray facilities were still not coming forward to get their facilities registered\/licensed by AERB. <\/p>\n
Registering the facilities with AERB and obtaining license is mandatory, it stated. <\/p>\n
For ensuring radiation safety of medical practitioners, operators and patients, AERB said it was necessary to obtain the license of AERB for operation of Medical Diagnostic X-ray equipment.<\/p>\n
Unauthorised use of medical diagnostic X-ray equipment without license of AERB is an offence under Atomic Energy (Radiation Protection) Rules 2004. AERB from time to time carry out special regulatory inspections and enforcement actions against those facilities violating the Rules.<\/p>\n
Activities concerning establishment and utilization of nuclear facilities and use of radioactive sources are to be carried out in accordance with the provisions of the Atomic Energy Act 1962. <\/p>\n
In pursuance of the objective of ensuring safety of the members of the public and occupational workers as well as protection of environment, AERB has been entrusted with the responsibility of framing Rules and Regulations and implementation of the same.<\/p>\n
