The covid pandemic appears to have taken off focus from other vector borne or tropical diseases in the middle of the tropical summer months. An alert was sounded by the State National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme, under the department of Health& Family Welfare(DoHFW) Nagaland. The DoHFW identified various colonies in Dimapur, Kohima, Wokha and Mokokchung districts as having very high vector density. The findings were made after entomological study of Dengue vector density in the districts. The findings also indicate that of all, Dimapur district has the highest mosquito population with high risk of transmission in all the localities. Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral disease occurring in tropical and subtropical areas.The disease is spread to people through the bites of infected Aedes species mosquitoes (Ae. aegypti or Ae. albopictus). These are the same types of mosquitoes that spread Zika and chikungunya viruses. Symptoms of the disease include fever, headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle and joint pain, and rash. Severe dengue causes abdominal pain and vomiting, breathing difficulties and a decrease in blood platelets that can lead to internal bleeding.Those who become infected with the virus a second time are at a significantly greater risk of developing severe disease. In severe cases there is serious bleeding and shock, which can be life threatening. Treatment includes fluids and pain relievers. Severe cases require hospital care and treatment. Dengue is caused due to four viruses, namely – DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3, and DENV-4. The virus enters a mosquito when it bites an already infected person. And the illness is spread when it bites a healthy person, and the virus spreads through the person’s bloodstream. A person who has recovered from a specific Dengue is immune to it but not the other three types. The probability of developing severe Dengue fever, also known as Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever(DHF), increases if a person is infected a second, third or fourth time. Simple methods of prevention of Dengue is use of mosquito repellant. An infected person has to adopt strict personal hygiene by frequent handwashing with sanitiser and liquid soap. The Aedes mosquito breeds in clean and stagnant water. Keep water covered at all times and use a proper disinfectant if necessary. Turn over any vessels which can accumulate water and scrub the surfaces thoroughly so as to reduce the chances of developing a breeding ground for the mosquitoes.Civic bodies have also resorted to use of fogging machines in colonies as a method of prevention of spread of Dengue etc. Researchers are still working on finding a specific cure for Dengue fever. Dengue fever treatment involves the use of pain relievers with acetaminophen. Additionally, your doctor will recommend you to drink plenty of fluids and take rest. Just as efforts are on globally to find a specific cure for curing covid-19, the news that a third wave is on its way only amplifies the health crisis in the country. India might witness the third Covid-19 wave in August with daily cases clocking between 1-1.5 lakh, according to a study conducted by IIT researchers. However, researchers said the third wave is likely to be weaker than the second wave. The state health authorities need to review their preparedness not only for covid-19 but also Dengue. Other deadly tropical diseases such as mosquito-borne Japanese encephalitis, chikugunya and Zika are not far behind.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
Health alert<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[685],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-209605","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-editorial"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/nagalandpost.net\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/209605","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/nagalandpost.net\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/nagalandpost.net\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/nagalandpost.net\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/nagalandpost.net\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=209605"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/nagalandpost.net\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/209605\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/nagalandpost.net\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=209605"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/nagalandpost.net\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=209605"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/nagalandpost.net\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=209605"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
