It was a befitting honour for Dr.S.C.Jamir to have been awarded with the nation’s third highest civilian award- the Padma Bhushan on November 8,2021- by the President of India Ram Nath Kovind in New Delhi. Dr Jamir has been actively involved with Naga politics since 1957 and is also the only surviving member of the Naga People’s Convention(NPC), that signed the 16-Point Agreement which was the basis for creation of Nagaland as the 16th state of the Indian union in 1960. The newly formed state was officially inaugurated by India’s second president Dr.S.Radhakrishnan on December 1,1963. Dr.Jamir was five-time chief minister of Nagaland (1980, 1982–1986, 1989–90 and 1993–2003). He is also the only Naga to have served the longest period as Governor (Goa 2004 to July 2008; Maharashtra July 19,2008-2013 and also additional charge of Gujarat in Julyh 2009; Odisha March 9,2013 to 2018). Late Dr.Hokishe Sema was the first Naga politician to be appointed as Governor(Himachal Pradesh from April 1983 to March 1986). He was elected to the Lok Sabha at the age of 30 in 1961 and went on to become parliamentary secretary to Jawaharlal Nehru and by 1961 got new assignment as union deputy minister holding charge of various portfolios such as railways, labour,relief & rehabilitation and community development & cooperation, food and agriculture. After graduating in Law from Allahabad University and at the age of 27 he plunged into politics as a member of the Naga People’s Convention(NPC). Since the late 50s Dr Jamir has had first-hand experience of the darkest days in the erstwhile Naga Hills district and Naga Hills Tuensang Area. He along with leaders of various Naga tribes, under the banner of NPC, committed themselves to ending the nightmare period when helpless Naga civilians found themselves caught between the actions of police and armed forces on one side and the Naga group on the other. Jamir has been outspoken and vocal against extortion, threats, interference in government and elections etc by armed group. He spoke openly against such activities because he believed, they were destroying people’s freedom and democratic rights besides and damaging the psyche of the people. Over and above, Jamir is perhaps the one politician in Nagaland and the chief minister, who has been living under a psychological siege against the backdrop of being the prime target of assassination. He survived four assassination attempts, three while as chief minister and the last while as Governor of Goa, while travelling to Mokokchung on November 24,2007. It was only providence that saved his life on all occasions. Whether within or beyond the borders of Nagaland, Dr.S.C.Jamir has never shied away from openly admitting that he is an Indian citizen. He also openly referred to India as ‘mother India’ which many choose to avoid. It is a testimony to his loyalty to the constitution and a citizen of India. Dr.S.C.Jamir became the target of extreme vilification from foes for his political ideology. Whatever he had said and predicted have proved true and were borne out of his desire to enlighten, embolden empower people. All these go to show the quality of Dr. Jamir’s excellence in statecraft and intellect. Dr.S.C.Jamir is a philosopher-politician, a quality that places him well ahead of his time and perhaps, like a comet, that comes rarely.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
