Ao Senso Telongjem Dimapur (ASTD) has expressed concern over the “increasing trend” of misuse of social media platform to spread “fake news”.<\/p>\n
In a press release, ASTD president L. Wati Jamir and general secretary K. Mar Lemtur expressed deep concern for individuals, particularly citizens of Dimapur, who might get into legal trouble for spreading “fake news” during the pandemic. ASTD also expressed resentment over the “unfortunate but palpable incident of inhuman treatment” that occurred at Vidima Village and Nihoto Village. The union said such incidents have sent “very wrong message of racial discrimination in the minds of the people”.<\/p>\n
ASUD said it has also learnt that “some faith based religious organisations\/group” have been defying the government’s directives and guidelines by organising mass gatherings and religious services in the State. The union urged all to refrain from such actions. While urging all to refrain from spreading rumours, the union asked all to strictly follow the lockdown guidelines to prevent any untoward incidents.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, while encouraging people to point out irregularities in the fight against COVID-19 by indulging in constructive criticisms and sharing factual information, Dimapur Ao Youth Organisation (DAYO) has expressed its strong opposition to sharing of fake news and uploading pictures and videos of people indulging in criminal and morally abhorrent behaviours on social media. Pointing out that the actions of a few had brought shame on Nagaland, the organisation warned both its members and general public not to indulge in such practices. It cautioned that such “thoughtless and insensible actions by a few” could help project the entire State in a poor light and stressed that this needed to be stopped.<\/p>\n
DAYO asserted that any individual posting any material that could bring a bad name to the Ao community in general and the organisation in particular without considering the gravity of the materials being uploaded or shared on different social media platforms would not be looked upon kindly. “We urge members of DAYO and Ao community in general not to indulge in any criminal activity or spreading fake news in these grave times and in future too. Furthermore, we urge all members to act benevolently towards fellow humans, which is a moral thing to do in the eyes of not only God but of mankind,” it emphasised.<\/p>\n
The organisation warned that anyone indulging in any such irresponsible act that could endanger lives and properties of others would be made answerable, adding it would be compelled to proceed legally against such individuals. <\/p>\n
