Reacting to the April 14, 2020 incident involving certain youth from Vidima village, who were seen assaulting some non-locals in a video clip that had gone viral on social media, the Vidima Village Council (VVC) Sunday sought to “bring out the facts and circumstances that led to the drastic steps taken by the youth.”<\/p>\n
In a press release VVC chairman Pelezo Zumvü and secretary Keduvi Richa stated that following the outbreak of the coronavirus and subsequent imposition of lock down by the government, the village at a general meeting on March 22, 2020 resolved to impose complete lockdown within the village jurisdiction. <\/p>\n
VVC said the meet decided that no one from the village would leave the village without prior consent from the council and no person from outside would be allowed to enter the village jurisdiction. Accordingly, VVC said it notified all the villagers working in other places to return to the village before March 25, 2020 after which the village would be placed under complete lockdown. <\/p>\n
VVC said the step taken was appreciated by all the villagers and everyone readily complied with the directives of the council.<\/p>\n
After the village lockdown, VVC said everything was going well in the village until the evening of April 13, 2020 when a report was received that a certain person from Assam had entered the village. <\/p>\n
However, VVC said that since the report came in late in the evening, the youth volunteers decided to conduct the search on April 14, 2020 morning.<\/p>\n
It said that the next day when the village youth volunteers had gone to conduct search, they found a particular house where a highly suspected person was allegedly being put up. <\/p>\n
On enquiry by the youth, VVC said a woman in that house strongly denied the presence of any person from outside and even dared the youth to conduct search of the house.<\/p>\n
On searching, VVC said the suspected person was found hiding inside the house and therefore the youth asked as to when the person had entered the village. According to VVC, the woman claimed that it had been weeks since the person had arrived.<\/p>\n
However, VVC said that on interrogating the suspected person he confessed to have entered the village on March 13, 2020. VVC said the “lies and the adamant attitude” of the woman highly provoked the youth who resorted to “drastic measure in the spur of the moment.”<\/p>\n
Expressing concern over the incident and subsequent events that unfurled, the VVC admitted that the incident as depicted in the viral video was serious and the action taken by the youth was “extreme”. <\/p>\n
It, however, requested all concerned to “look at the incident after fully considering the events and circumstances leading to the ugly episode before passing any judgement.”<\/p>\n
Stating that it had been putting all efforts for the welfare of people, VVC said it was never its intention to harass anyone, saying it was “equally concerned” about the hardship and inconvenience faced by all due to the present pandemic.<\/p>\n
