He cautioned the citizens there were also other non-Naga insurgent groups operating in the state, especially Dimapur. “But ultimately, we get the blame,” Kaito said. To this, he called upon NCD to stand firm against such anti-social elements.

Power adviser Tovihoto Ayemi, who too was present, said the cemetery was a common property and the final resting place for all, irrespective of colour, caste or creed.

He congratulated NCD for fulfilling the long-cherished dream of having a new cemetery as the old cemetery was fully occupied. He said there had been instances were death bodies had to be buried on top of others due to lack of space.

Ayemi remarked that the government and the community had to come together to prevent spread of COVID-19 pandemic.

A short speech was also delivered by Dimapur deputy commissioner (DC) Anoop Khinchi, even as vice-president (administration) and convenor of new cemetery development project K Ghokheto Chophy presented a brief report on the new cemetery.

Chophy said the 18-bigha plot was purchased by chief minister Neiphiu Rio in 2005 and the burial chapel constructed in 2008 with donation from Sethi & Sons.

While Rs 10 lakh for chowkidar’s house, power line connection and transformer installation was sanctioned by former chief minister TR Zeliang in 2015, former Dimapur DC Kesonyu Yhome sanctioned Rs 1 lakh more, he added.

However, due to financial constraints, he there was delay in constructing and maintaining the cemetery. Consequently, he informed the gathering that Rs 55 lakh was collected from donors, including minister Kaito Aye, transport minister P Paiwang Konyak, rural development minister Metsubo Jamir, tribal affairs minister Temjen Imna Along Longkumer, Ayemi, director general of police TJ Longkumer, Naga Army CNC H Samson Ayemi, entrepreneur Mangilal Jain & Sons and OSD to transport minister Niholu Ayemi.

The construction was, however, put on hold due to nationwide lockdown. In a meeting held at Hotel Saramati here on April 25, the State government advised NCD to complete the cemetery work within one month, especially in view of COVID-19 pandemic. The remaining construction work was thus completed though there was still much to be done.

Chophy said one block had been reserved for COVID-19 causalities, if required, where remains of others would not be allowed to be buried at least for the next two to three months.

During the inaugural programme, dedicatory prayer was proposed by Konyak Baptist Church, Dimapur pastor Rev Lonlong Konyak.

The programme was chaired by NCD general secretary Thsapongkyu Sangtam and welcome address delivered by NCD president T Bangerloba. The vote of thanks was delivered by NCD vice president Eliho Angami.

[679

post-216171","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-nagaland-news
["GET
