{"id":23370,"date":"2017-12-14T00:50:09","date_gmt":"2017-12-14T00:50:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/151.106.38.4\/2017\/12\/14\/climate-change-media-urged-to-educate-policy-makers\/"},"modified":"2017-12-14T00:50:09","modified_gmt":"2017-12-14T00:50:09","slug":"climate-change-media-urged-to-educate-policy-makers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nagalandpost.net\/index.php\/2017\/12\/14\/climate-change-media-urged-to-educate-policy-makers\/","title":{"rendered":"Climate change: Media urged to educate policy makers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img src=\/old_site\/><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Chief Conservator of Forest and State Nodal Officer for Climate Change, Supongnukshi has urged media to educate policy makers as it had more access to information than the latter.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>Responding to queries on last day of the three-day media workshop on climate change here on Wednesday, Supongnukshi also encouraged media to publish success stories of local people from different places.<\/div>\n<div>Asserting that local people had adapted to climate change with their own methodologies and experiences, he said their success stories might be helpful for others to adopt various strategies according to the changes in the climate.<\/div>\n<div>On the State Action Plan on Climate Change (SAPCC) initiated by the Forest department, the Chief Conservator said data was collected from 25 departments involved in the climate change subject.<\/div>\n<div>He informed the participants that SAPCC incorporated data collected from national research institutions and from those already available with the department, adding that action plan was formulated based on guidelines of the National Policy on Climate Change.<\/div>\n<div>Stating that it depended on individual departments on how to take the action plan forward, Supongnukshi, said that an integrated approach was required to work together.<\/div>\n<div>He said the Forest department would set up a web portal where information will be made available and that it would be one of the most important portals to disseminate information on climate change.<\/div>\n<div>One of the panellists, policy analyst, Amba Jamir, who is a member of Integrated Mountain Initiative and Executive Secretary of Sustainable Development Forum of Nagaland (SDFN), said, climate change had huge impact on mountainous regions and Nagaland, being a mountainous State, faced a grave challenge.<\/div>\n<div>Jamir said with 70%&nbsp; of Nagaland\u2019s population already dependent on agriculture, media and policy makers need to wake up to the gravity of the situation as Nagas depend on land and natural resources for their livelihood. He added that policies adopted by village councils seemed to be more effective than the&nbsp; ones by the government.<\/div>\n<div>India Science Wire\u2019s Managing Editor, Dinesh C. Sharma said the subject of climate change was challenging and complex and that its impact was felt mostly by local people, who were most vulnerable.<\/div>\n<div>Stressing on the importance of connecting with scientists and experts, Sharma said that unless the research activities were translated into concrete action, polices alone would not help.<\/div>\n<div>Global Open University, Nagaland Director, Dr Imotemsu Ao also spoke on the occasion.<\/div>\n<div>The three-day media workshop on climate change was jointly organized by Indian Himalayas Climate Adaptation Programme of Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, in collaboration with State Climate Change Cell, NASTEC and Centre for Media Studies.<\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chief Conservator of Forest and State Nodal Officer for Climate Change, Supongnukshi has urged media to educate policy makers as it had more access to information than the latter.
