The Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) is shocked and appalled at the statement and vehemently condemns such callous and immature allegations. Mr. Kewekhape Therie, seems to have lost his sanity. His utterances against the State Government and the Hon’ble Chief Minister deserves the highest level of condemnation and raises serious questions on his mental balance. His fabricated allegations against the Chief Minister are a reflection of his state of mind as it is unimaginable that a person, leave alone a leader, can make such claims. Perhaps his failure as a politician and the absolute irrelevance of his party have created high levels of frustrations which he is unable to handle and therefore has no option but to come up with such wild allegations that have not a single iota of truth.

2) Mr. K. Therie, was a Member of the Congress Government in the period between 1998 to 2002, as a Minister in the S.C. Jamir led ministry. He will recollect that he was unceremoniously dropped from the ministry and later expelled from the Congress party for his anti-party activities and his open opposition to the publication of the S.C. Jamir authored NPCC booklet “Bedrock of Naga Society”. He vehemently opposed the Congress policies and loudly advocated the removal of the Congress Party from Nagaland due to its “anti-Naga policies”. He joined the regional party and condemned the Congress in all his utterances calling the Congress party in Nagaland and Delhi dictatorial, dynastic and shameless. He was made Finance Minister in the regional government of 2003. He went to the extent of calling his former Chief Minister S.C. Jamir, “shameless” in the floor of the assembly and he was a loud supporter of the policies of the Neiphiu Rio led ministry on the political issue. He supported the “active facilitator” role of the Rio ministry and advocated the “inclusive and equi-closeness” approach of the Rio Government especially bringing on board all sections of society, especially the mass based civil societies, NGOs and political groups. It was a policy that ensured relative peace in Nagaland after decades of turmoil. However, his poor performance, mishandling of the finance department and his attitude towards the party resulted in him being dropped as a minister. He had gone to the extent of openly arguing and disrespecting the Party President. Later he tried all means to topple the ministry and carried out various anti-party activities and was ultimately expelled from the regional party. Today, he has returned to the very party he had condemned and insulted and is back with the leaders whom he considered dictatorial, dynastic and shameless.

3) It is exceedingly outrageous to claim that the objective of the state government is to derail the peace process so that the Chief Minister can continue to fish in troubled waters! This claim is bereft of any truth, logic or sanity, and is alarming that a senior politician should be making such ridiculous claims. The Paratroopers and the Army do not operate under the command of the State Government and are under the direct control of the Defence Ministry. However, since the incident is a clear case of a special operation terribly botched up, a Court of Inquiry has been constituted, and it is expected that the guilty shall be brought to book. Accusing others of removing an incumbent Governor is nothing but an insult to the Honourable President of India.

4) The present Chief Minister and his successive governments have always opposed the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) and the declaration of Nagaland as a disturbed area all along. The State Government has consistently recommended for removal of the disturbed area regime and non-implementation of AFSPA in any Naga area. Even in the aftermath of the Oting Massacre, the State Cabinet was quick to reiterate its opposition to AFSPA while condemning the inhuman crime. The statements of the Chief Minister and the recordings of his speech are available on all media platforms. The leadership of Mr. Neiphiu Rio has always stood up for resolution of the decades old Indo-Naga political imbroglio from day one. He and his governments have made significant sacrifices and contributions towards the peace process and the achievement of many successful milestones in the negotiations as a facilitator.

5) In the present government too, the series of consultative meets with civil societies, tribal hohos, church organisations and Naga national political groups in the past more than three years are clear indications of the intent and seriousness of the leadership in pushing for an early solution. The consultative meet of all stakeholders held on 15thOctober, 2020, the formation of an opposition-less government, the special discussions in the Nagaland Legislative Assembly, the formation of the Parliamentary Committee and Core Committee on Naga Political Issues and the series of meets with the political groups and Central leaders are just a few of the many concrete actions undertaken by the present leadership and the government to facilitate the peace talks. The Naga public are not only the observers of these actions but also contributing participants. If the NPCC President Mr. K. Therie, is unaware of these developments, then obviously he is living in his own isolated cocoon. But if he is aware of these aspects and still making wild utterances, then he needs a rain-check.

6) We do not need to answer to the Naga people on our approach and policies on the Naga political issue because in all our ventures and consultations the mass based organisations and stakeholders have been participating members of the process. However, the utterances of Mr. K. Therie, are such that it deserves condemnation and reminding. He is perhaps aware that the Nagaland Legislative Assembly will be having a special discussion on 20thDecember, 2021 and as the true democratic representatives of the people, the House and its Honourable Members will deliberate in a threadbare and democratic manner that expresses and voices the feelings of the masses. However, Mr. K. Therie, and his party have completely lost the mandate and confidence of the people and have been wiped out from the political landscape of the Nagaland. He and his party were outrightly defeated in the last assembly elections and the so called grand old party is today without a single representative in the assembly. It speaks volumes of his leadership and his acceptability and where his leadership is headed. His utterances are not only demeaning to all sections of Naga society especially the stakeholders, but it is worse than slander and defamation.

7) Mr. K. Therie, is making wild utterances from the comfort of his home with no sense of responsibility. May we remind him that the NDPP had immediately condemned the incident, called for repeal of AFSPA and declared three days of all party flags to fly at half-mast. Our President was stationed in Mon and our leaders and representatives were available round the clock with necessary assistance. After this period, a high level central delegation reached the place of incident, camped in Mon and met all sections including the bereaved families and injured persons.

8) Insofar as the Oting tragedy is concerned the State Government has transparently stated on all the steps it has undertaken, and some of the highlights are:

• The State Government and the Honourable Chief Minister condemned the incident and announced the formation of a high level SIT to be headed by an officer of IGP level.

• Ex-gratia was announced by the State Government and the Central Government including government jobs for the next of kin.

• Casualties were evacuated and air-lifted by state helicopters and all expenses for their medical treatment is being paid by the State Government.

• The Home Commissioner and DGP reached the place of incident and camped in Mon district to oversee the situation.

• The Honourable Chief Minister reached Mon and attended the funeral service, held consultations with all sections and paid his respects to the dead and met the bereaved.

• The State Cabinet recommended for the repeal of the AFSPA and reiterated its condemnation of the massacre while calling for justice.

• A special session of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly will be held on 20th December, 2021.

9) It is the clarion call of the NDPP to all right thinking citizens to condemn such statements filled with malafide intent to cause confusion and defame the government and the Hon’ble Chief Minister. At a time when the entire State is still mourning and coming to terms with the tragic and unimaginable loss of innocent young lives at Oting, which is unbecoming and an insult to the memories of those young men that Mr. K. Therie, or that matter anyone to be trying to score brownie points over the tragic incident.

(Issued by NDPP Media & Communication Committee)

["post-243510","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry
["GET
