It is not just a sport in India, but a part of the national culture and tradition. The craze for cricket is negative. Although football is more widespread in India; yet it has not received the kind of financial support which cricket’s IPL has been receiving. The IPL has rocketed Indian cricket beyond the financial realms of other nations and turned them into mercenaries of money and making them feel like gods of cricket. Cricket mania has reached hysterical levels and marketers and advertisers have seized the opportunity to roll out attractive promotions as advertising models for their products. Whenever the victorious Indian Cricket team members arrive, they are greeted like heroes and treated no less than Bollywood celebrities. Their performances are however, marked by inconsistencies, regularly swinging from highs to lows. The glory boys of Indian cricket were shocked by South Africa 2-1 in the recent test series and that has practically made them bite the dust. The South Africans are by no means the best. India is ranked higher than South Africa at third place in ICC test ranking. On the other hand, South Africa is ranked fifth. Even in the ICC ODI as well as T20, India is ranked higher than South Africa. However, at home the South African team is a different ball game especially when it comes to test cricket. In the 2017-18 series South Africa beat India 2-1 the same margin that was repeated after the current series. In ODI during the 2017-18 series India beat South Africa 5-1 and also won the T20 series 2-1. The Indian team not only suffered a defeat in the series but also an implosion after its star cricketer captain Virat Kohli stepped down. His decision was not totally unexpected since his rate of success as captain has long passed and the team needed someone with fresh ideas. Kohli was ultra aggressive on field and led by example-be it with batting or his displeasure at umpires or rival team players. Had Kohli scored some big runs in the recently concluded test series and yet India lost, the story would have been different. Perhaps Kohli’s offer to resign wouldn’t have been accepted. Anyway, now that Kohli is out of the captaincy, the BCCI under Sourav Ganguly now has to choose the next Indian cricket captain. The obvious choice will be Rohit Sharma, the vice captain who has an outstanding record of runs and also captained the team in the absence of Kohli. Rohit also captains the Mumbai Indians the top IPL T20 team. He had also ended 2021 as the leading run-getter in Tests for India and has emerged as one of the mainstay batters at the top of the line-up, following his impressive return as an opening batter in Australia and England. The other contender is K.L.Rahul who was named as vice captain in the absence of Rohit Sharma. However Rahul is inexperienced as a leader and also lacking the right aggressive approach to his batting skills. The other contender is Ravichandran Ashwin India’s top spinner and who has led an IPL team for one season. Betwen Rahul and Ashwin there is no doubt that the latter is the better and more experienced test cricketer in all formats. The best to take over from Kohli is certainly Rohit Sharma and rightly so considering his records and experience.

Without mentioning cricket, Indian sports would be incomplete.
