Entertainment company Disney has responded to criticism of its forthcoming live action adaptation of \u2018Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs\u2019 made by \u2018Game of Thrones\u2019 star Peter Dinklage.
Dinklage said the remake of the 1937 animated film, based on a story from the Brothers Grimm, was \u201cbackward\u201d, reports bbc.com.
Disney said it was going to \u201cavoid reinforcing stereotypes from the original animated film\u201d.
Dinklage had said Disney should have reassessed the project.
\u201cI was a little taken aback by [the fact] they were very proud to cast a Latina actress as Snow White,\u201d he told podcaster Marc Maron.
\u201cBut you\u2019re still telling the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs\u201d.
Dinklage has a form of dwarfism called achondroplasia.
\u201cYou\u2019re progressive in one way but you\u2019re still making that backward story of seven dwarves living in the cave,\u201d he continued.
\u201cThey were so proud of that, and all love and respect to the actress and the people who thought they were doing the right thing but I\u2019m just like, \u2018What are you doing?\u2019\u201d
In a statement, Disney said the live action remake will be an updated version of the original 1937 film.
\u201cWe are taking a different approach with these seven characters and have been consulting with members of the dwarfism community,\u201d it said in a statement.
\u201cWe look forward to sharing more as the film heads into production after a lengthy development period.\u201d
Oscar-nominated producer Marc Platt, who also worked on Disney\u2019s live-action rendition of \u2018The Little Mermaid\u2019, is set to produce the film. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
