Among all the states in India, Nagaland is the most unique. It is inhabited by so many different tribes, each with their own language, custom and traditions. It has to be mentioned that not very long time back, Nagas simply existed as warring independent villages. There was no such thing as \u201cThe Naga people\u201d before Phizo came into the picture. Phizo brought the Naga tribes together and, as such, Nagas came to be seen as a composite Naga people.
Phizo is not just the father of the Nagas but for all the hill people of Northeast India because all the hill states of the Northeast owe their advancement and birth to the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution of India which was adopted on the basis of the 9 point agreement drawn up by the then Governor of Assam, sir Akbar Hydari, and the NNC led by Phizo.
Today, while all the northeastern states have frog-leaped ahead in terms of all round development, Nagaland has lagged behind due to the unsolved Naga political issue.
The main reason for which the Naga political issue has remained unsolved till date is this one trait of the Nagas that we will not go against the wishes of any dissident when discussing and deciding issues among ourselves. There is such a strong respect for the opinions of others that even a single minority dissent can turn down an issue, or at any rate, result in a stalemate.
This is the reason for much of the long drawn out discussions and arguments which we Nagas generally indulge in, and the impossibility of securing assent to any proposal as long as everybody is not in favor of it.
Since attaining statehood in 1964, governments have come and gone, but all the governments under different CMs too seems to have been handicapped because of this Naga trait. And because of this handicap, all meaningful development has stalled.
Many crucial issues have come up but have either been relegated to the background or decisive and belated action(s) is being delayed. In a democracy, for the greater good, the government cannot afford to go massaging every ego and pampering every dissent.
The decision of the government in creating four more districts in Nagaland will certainty accelerate the pace of development provided the Naga trait does not come in between.
The government will have to take dissent in its stride and forge ahead with its developmental programs. The creation of Chumoukedima district, in particular, was a much felt need as it resolved the issue of giving the right historical perspective regarding the headquarter of erstwhile Dimapur district; since Chumoukedima was the first administrative headquarter of the Naga Hills set up by the British in 1866.
It is unfortunate that certain sections of people are objecting to the government\u2019s decision to place Dhansiripar sub-division under Chumoukedima district. Dhansiripar, by virtue of being one of the oldest sub-division of erstwhile Dimapur district, has everything to gain by being a part of the new Chumoukedima district.
It will be wise on the part of the people of Dhansiripar sub-division to, \u2018on their own volition,\u2019 decide to become the eldest member of Chumoukedima district, and not let the \u2018Naga trait\u2019 derail their wagon of peace, progress, and prosperity.
