{"id":25218,"date":"2017-11-16T22:57:41","date_gmt":"2017-11-16T22:57:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/151.106.38.4\/2017\/11\/16\/national-press-day-observed-in-mokokchung\/"},"modified":"2017-11-16T22:57:41","modified_gmt":"2017-11-16T22:57:41","slug":"national-press-day-observed-in-mokokchung","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nagalandpost.net\/index.php\/2017\/11\/16\/national-press-day-observed-in-mokokchung\/","title":{"rendered":"National press day observed in Mokokchung"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img src=\/old_site\/TJAGMUSVUAPNDFKOCLKX.jpg><\/p>\n<div>Parliamentary secretary for Information &amp; Public Relations (IPR), Imtikumzuk called upon the media fraternity in the state to carry out their duties with an unbiased attitude to promote a healthy atmosphere in the society.<\/div>\n<div>Parliamentary secretary was speaking as the chief guest at the National Press Day celebration at Cosmos Entertainment Hall &amp; Restaurant on November 16, jointly organized by the department of IPR, the Mokokchung Press Club, Kohima Press Club and Dimapur Press Club.<\/div>\n<div>While dwelling on the theme, \u201cupholding journalistic ethics during elections\u201d, Imtikumzuk termed it as very aptly chosen \u201csince elections is around the corner\u201d.<\/div>\n<div>He said that the media, recognized as the fourth estate, serves as \u201ca facilitator, protector and enabler of democratic institutions and processes\u201d and therefore, strongly urged the media persons to carry out their duties without any bias and report events factually.<\/div>\n<div>While underscoring the importance of media in the society, Imtikumzuk said that the media must realize that it remained always accountable to its readers and viewers.<\/div>\n<div>He said that the influence, credibility and quality of the local media has grown in scale over the years. \u201cIts significance has further increased with higher literacy levels and the revolution in communication technologies,\u201d said Imtikumzuk while adding that it has become a powerful means for shaping the ideas, aspirations and behavior of people, even in the remotest corners.<\/div>\n<div>He urged for independence and integrity in the functioning of the media and at the same cautioned against sensationalizing news or events because \u201ccareers and reputations take years to build but only minutes to demolish\u201d. He said media was entrusted with an additional responsibility to \u201cact as a watchdog of public interest and give voice to the marginalized\u201d.<\/div>\n<div>\u201cThe power of the media should be used to reset our moral compass and promote liberalism, humanism and decency in public life,\u201d the parliamentary secretary asserted.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div>Deithono Nakhro, state icon, PwDs, Nagaland speaking on the theme, said journalists in Nagaland were doing a great job given the circumstances of a society with a close knit community. She said that unless one has a deep nuance of understanding the history and culture, one cannot get the story right.<\/div>\n<div>Nakhro reminded the gathered scribes on the importance of ethical journalism while remaining independent and neutral during election reporting and not forgetting humanity as the stories published in the papers would impact a large section of the society.<\/div>\n<div>She asked them to pose questions to the leaders of the state on general issues and let them be accountable for their actions. \u201cWe the journalists should act as the voice of the people and as the representative of the people we are tasked with a huge responsibility to make their voice heard in the upper echelon and back to the grassroot level inorder to make our society flourish\u201d, she said.<\/div>\n<div>Earlier at the function, invocation was offered by Temsuwati Kichu asso pastor MTBA, V. Nakhro, deputy CEO gave an insight on the topic \u201cinformed &amp; ethical voting\u201d.
