Dimapur Ao Lanur Telongjem (DALT) in collaboration with Dimapur Wats\u00fc Telongjem (DWT) celebrated International Mother Language Day (IMLD) at Dimapur Ao Baptist Church (DABA), here, on Monday.
Addressing the gathering as guest speaker, Dr. Pangersenla Walling said that multilingual learning was for two purposes, \u201cintegrative\u201d and \u201cinstrumental\u201d.
She explained that learning a language for work related purpose or job acquirement was known as instrumental linguistic while integrative linguistic meant wanting to become a member of that language speaking group.
On learning of multilingual through grammar translation method, she said that this method was still present in the state and that Hindi and English languages were taught through this method.
In the context of the state, Dr. Pangersenla however noted that in the olden days, pronunciation and use of intonation were not taught and people born before the 1990s\u2019 faced the challenge of speaking English although they understood it.
Stressing on the topic, \u201cUsing technology for multilingual learning: Challenges and opportunities\u201d, she said that researchers had claimed that kids who grew up watching televisions would have better advantage, knowledge and understanding on their educational career in terms of multilingual learning
She said that researchers also claimed that these kids get used to speaking and understanding multilingual even before attending schools.
In this regard, she pointed out that kids were better at understanding and speaking multiple languages not because of the method of teaching but because of the growth of technology.
She further stressed that \u201cglobalization\u201d could not be ignored and added that it was through globalization that people were able to learn multiple languages easily.
On the challenges of learning languages through technology, she said that it was not enough to learn only a language without learning the culture and tradition of the specific native speaker.
Citing the example of Japan which dedicated its resources to learn English language though apps and later signed up for exchange students, Dr. Pangersenla pointed out that learning multiple languages from native speakers had more advantages.
It may be mentioned that a pilot survey was conducted by Dr. Pangersenla in Mokokchung among a group of 100 people including students and elders where she put up three questions of which one question read as \u201cWhich subject would you learn out of the four, Alternative English, Ao, Hindi or Korean?\u201d
In this she said that 65% opted for English for the purpose of acquiring work, 20% for Korean as they admired the culture of Korea, 10% opted for Hindi, while only 5 % opted for Ao and that the remaining 95% said that Ao language learnt in the Church was \u201cmore than enough.\u201d
In this regard, she lamented that within 25 years, Ao language was severely in danger of extinction if the same continued.
Meanwhile, dwelling on why IMTD was celebrated, convener, DALT Literature Board, Supu Jamir narrated the story of how five people from Bangladesh (Erstwhile known as East Pakistan) were killed and several hundreds injured when they agitated against the present Pakistan who had declared Urdu language to be the official language of Pakistan.
He informed that February 21 was declared as International Mother Language Day by UNESCO in 1999 and had been observed throughout the world since February 21, 2000.
It may be mentioned that Supu Jamir also released a book, titled \u201cAo Oshi S\u00fciren\u201d, authored by C Walu Walling.
Earlier, the programme was chaired by T Lanuwapang and Lanusenla Imsong and invocation was said by pastor, Indisen Ao Baptist Church, Rev Dr. Temjen Oz\u00fck\u00fcm.
In the opening ceremony, DWT presented a group song, while highlights of the programme included poem by DABA Christian Education Ministry, S\u00fcmedem Fellowship, and songs by Diphupar Ao Baptist Church Youth Ministry, Aoyimk\u00fcm Baptist Church Youth Ministry and recitation of months and days in Ao language by DABA Christian Education Ministry, Signal Fellowship.
Later, vote of thanks was proposed by DALT president, Tia Longchar and benediction was said by Dimapur Area associate pastor Women Telongjem president, S Achila. (Staff Reporter)
CCHE: With an aim to make young people aware of their cultural roots and help them embrace their identities, Capital College of Higher Education (CCHE) organised IMLD at the college premises, here on Monday.
During the programme, students were provided with the opportunity to work on their own mother language and gain more insights.
Speaking at the programme as introductory speaker, assistant professor, department of Tenyidie, Theja Lohe deliberated on the need for young people to preserve their gradually eroding cultural heritage.
While highlighting that the young people today were unaware of their own mother language, he emphasized on the need to explore various platforms through which mother language could be used.
The programme was followed by translation activity where students were divided into 17 groups as per their languages and were assigned to translate a story titled: \u201cthe two friends and a bear\u201d, which was later narrated by a representative from each group.
The mother languages that participated were Chokri, Khezha, Lotha, Sumi, Ao, Konyak, Yimkhiung, Nepali, Hindi, Sangtam, Kuki, Pochury, Rengma, Chang, Khiamniungan, Zeliang and Urdu.
In his speech, CCHE principal, Dr. Zokho Venuh said that the tragedy facing the youth today was the loss of one\u2019s identity.
\u201cThere are many who do not even know basic vocabularies in their own mother language\u201d, he pointed out, while stressing on the need to preserve and promote one\u2019s own mother language.
He further concluded by stating that the college should undertake more such activities where students would engage in hands-on experiences. (Correspondent)
C-edge College: C-Edge College Dimapur celebrated IMLD on the theme, \u201cmother tongue is our lifeline\u201d to promote and preserve multilingual diversity.
Key speaker of the event, associate pastor women, Naga United Ao Baptist Church, Bendangyala Jamir highlighted on what mother tongue was, the fast deteriorating of language and emphasised on how to save and promote mother tongue.
During the programme, students presented various folk songs. A play based on how languages held strategic importance for people and could advance the process of education and development was also presented by the students of English honours.
Earlier, the event was hosted by Ilolika of VI semester, college EU president, Lyingbeni Enny said the invocation while vote of thanks was proposed by Medophrezo of BA IV semester.
Launching prog of Chang-English, English-Chang dictionary: To commemorate IMLD, the first revised edition of the Chang-English, English-Chang dictionary was released by Chairman of Chang literature Board (CLB), Bangchung. The dictionary compiled by (Lt) Achilla Imlong Erdican was revised and edited by Dr. Wongto Chingmak pastor. The programme was organised by Phinjem, media organ of Chang Baptist Church Dimapur.
PVHSS: Pranab Vidyapith Higher Secondary School (PVHSS), Dimapur celebrated the International Mother Language Day (Matribhasha Diwas) in its school auditorium on Monday.
