A democracy is not worth the name if the opposition has no vision for the nation but more interested to belittle or denigrate each other in order to accord self-acclaimed national alternative. While India is reeling under the weight of communalism and policies that are only serving the national interests of capitalists; the disparate opposition parties are more interested in trying to trip each other like crabs. The big test for the non-NDA parties is not about setting up a consensus candidate for the president of India but in getting their act together as constitutional watchdog. The NDA will get its man again to the Rashtrapati Bhavan since the little percentage of votes it requires can be obtained from friendly regional parties such as Nabeen Patnaik’s BJD in Odisha, Jaganmohan Reddy’s YSR Congress in Andhra Pradesh and even TRS in Telangana. The Aam Admi Party (AAP) the Johnny come lately of Indian politics, after winning Punjab and now ruling in two states(Delhi, Punjab)has like the TRS, said it won’t sit on the same room where Congress is also sitting; or it won’t be part of any opposition forum where Congress is also part of. All these have only made the BJP the obvious choice for many undecided. Due to kind of petty politics among the opposition, people in India are confused and resentful. Instead of mainstreaming their narrative against the wrong and controversial policies of the Modi government, the opportunistic opposition parties are acting as if each of them on their own, represent the entire opposition. All these have only made odds appear to favour the BJP for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. BJP can steam roll over the opposition parties anytime and so it is rightfully gung ho about its rosy prospects, as barring a few losses, BJP’s winning streak doesn’t appear to be reversing. In the recent assembly elections, BJP has retained four of the five states that went to the polls recently. It considers its poll victories as an endorsement of the policies and schemes of the Modi Government. On the other hand, the Congress cannot mount a credible challenge in 2024 or even lead the opposition coalition. The Gandhi family has gotten away with so many defeats since 2014 mainly because family drum beaters and sycophants in the Congress make it impossible for any other person outside the family to lead the party. Under the present Gandhi-led Congress many party stalwarts including potential young leaders were compelled to leave the party since they see no future in a family-run and dynastic party. As the only opposition party with pan-India reach, the Congress is still a potent force which can defeat the BJP. However, the Congress appears to be damned since sycophants don’t want any change and have made the Gandhis dance to their tune. Sadly, a party of 137 years history which started the independence movement from British colonial yoke that had political giants and stalwarts at its helm, is today a playground for the Gandhi siblings. All these only ensure that BJP has the advantage of deciding the political narrative.

Political developments in India throw up sharp contradictions between a hugely potent, effective and motivated ruling and a disarrayed, divided opposition parties who have attacked the government as much as they attack each other.
