Former US President Bill Clinton believes that \u201cdemocracy is fragile right now\u201d, and, says \u2018Variety\u2019, he spoke candidly on Saturday at A+E Networks and the History Channel\u2019s History Talks about the issues \u201ctearing us apart\u201d. \u201cWhat\u2019s more important? Our common humanity or differences?\u201d Clinton mused. \u201cAnd what works better to build the kind of future we all want? Does cooperation work better, or is everything a zero-sum game?\u201d
He answered the rhetorical question by saying, \u201cLife is not a zero-sum game. Football is a zero-sum game — I\u2019ve already watched one game today. I hope it\u2019s not true, but it may be true that saving our democracy is just a zero-sum game because democracy is fragile right now.\u201d
The former president was joined by Tom Hanks, chef-philanthropist Jose Andres and moderator Chelsea Clinton in an hour-long conversation. They spoke at length about their humanitarian efforts, as well as their hopes and concerns about the outlook of the country, spoke \u2018Variety\u2019.
Chelsea made one thing clear — young people alone should not be responsible for the future of the world. \u201cI loathe the framing that young people are going to save us,\u201d she said. \u201cWith all due respect, what the fk are adults doing?\u201d As the audience cheered, an aghast Hanks mouthed: \u201cShe said \u2018f<\/strong>k\u2019.\u201d
Hanks, speaking with the reverence and authority of a history professor, said that educating people about true historical events can help to get the public to care about — and advocate for — important causes in their own community.
But being a storyteller is a responsibility that comes with great power, he said. In short, according to \u2018Variety\u2019, he doesn\u2019t support artistes who feel inclined to bend, bow or break from reality.
\u201cI do non-fiction entertainment,\u201d noted Hanks, who has played real-life figures such as Captain Phillips, Mr Rogers, Walt Disney and Captain Sully Sullenberger on screen. \u201c[It\u2019s] the best of entertainment because that comes with a degree of education.\u201d
But while adapting stories for movies, TV, podcasts or documentaries, Hanks said there\u2019s an obligation to ensure the truth doesn\u2019t end up getting \u201ccrowded out\u201d at the expense of telling a good tale.
\u201cWhen we come across inconvenient facts that we don\u2019t want to talk about because it may take away from the purity of a protagonist \u2026 I say, \u2018Oh, what you want to do is alternative history.
