Congress party continues to be in the news for all the wrong reasons as it fire fights one crisis after another. This has happened after 2014 when the party led by Rahul though his mother was president, seemed to have lost direction. The latest crisis in Rajasthan is also due to mishandling of the rivalry between two of Rajasthan\u2019s prominent leaders- chief minister Askhok Gehlot and the party\u2019s generation next leader, Sachin Pilot. The 71-year old Ashok Gehlot, one of Rahul\u2019s close advisers, was chosen by the Gandhis to take over as next president of the Congress in the election slated on October 17 and results of which are to be declared by October 19. When Gehlot agreed he also wanted to remain as chief minister. However Rahul rejected Gehlot\u2019s plan in favour of the policy of one-man- one post. This would have paved the way for rehabilitating Sachin Pilot as chief minister, a post he so desired and which the Gandhis were not averse to. After all, Sachin had been instrumental in reviving the party organisation in Rajasthan to win a spectacular victory against BJP in 2018. However instead, the Gandhis committed a blunder by choosing veteran leader and semi-retired Ashok Gehlot to be chief minister. Once in the chair, Gehlot did everything to marginalise Sachin, probably to groom his son Vaibhav Gehlot, currently Congress Lok Sabha MP. Eventually Sachin rebelled but the 18 MLAs supporting him were not enough to bring down Gehlot. After his rebellion the high command relieved Sachin of the post of deputy chief minister and state party chief. He returned back but Gehlot did not restore the post of deputy chief minister or party chief. The Rajasthan crisis was similar to the case when in 2020, in the neighbouring state of Madhya Pradesh, Jyotiraditya Scindia defected to BJP along with his supporters to being down arch rival Kamal Nath\u2019s Congress government. The Gandhis should be blamed for the missteps of the Congress because they make the final decisions. However, it is considered a cardinal sin by the sycophancy filled AICC committee to apportion blame on the Gandhis, especially Rahul Gandhi, who wields power but insulated from accountability. The Rajasthan crisis, like all others before it such as Madhya Pradesh when the high command watched as Jyotiraditya was being sidelined by Kamal Nath and Punjab when the Gandhis allowed Sidhu to openly attack chief minister Amarinder Singh \u2013cost the Congress both states and Rajasthan is also likely to follow the same path. Scindia was not given the prominence because the Gandhi loyalist feared he would overshadow Rahul. Similarly, the same loyalists who messed up in Punjab did not want Sachin to move centre stage as likely Congress president as it would push Rahul into the shadows. For the Congress, its cup of woe seems unending even as the grand old party vainly attempts to conduct a farcical election to choose the next party president. While India has changed, the Congress refuses to change. It still lives in the past glory of the Indira-Rajiv heydays. However Indira was a hardcore politician and Rajiv, eventually learnt the tricks of the trade.Unfortunately the heir apparent Rahul is na\u00efve, a novice in politics and a non-serious politician. Rahul would do well to note that \u201cPolitics is a game of perception\u201d and \u201cdemocracy is a game of numbers\u201d.
