As mentioned earlier, election to constitute the next 14 Nagaland Legislative Assembly(NLA) will have to be held either by end of February or first week of March 2023. The Nagaland Legislative Assembly election in 2018 was held on February 27, 2018 in 59 out of 60 constituencies of the Legislative Assembly of Nagaland. The current 13th NLA was constituted on March 12,2018 and after the results of the assembly election are announced. The next 14th NLA has to be constituted ahead of the expiry of the tenure of the 13th NLA. Anticipation of likely solution to the Naga political issue had led to various organisations jump the gun in demanding deferment of polls. However, solution will have to wait longer and it could even be achieved by mid or even end of 2023 and much ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha election. Now that solution will no longer be a factor for demanding deferment of polls or promulgation of President’s Rule ; the only question is whether the legislators, if solution is achieved after election, will be willing to ‘pave way’ for implementation of solution? Political parties will soon be releasing their respective election manifestos as they indulge in rhetorical promises for the next five years. Of course, for the political parties, solution to the Naga political issue will remain a feature in their manifestos so as to reflect, like garnishing of their commitment for bringing ‘lasting peace and prosperity’. The regional party-NPF-since 2003 had promised to secure solution within three months of coming to power if people voted out the Congress from power. The Naga political issue became the one and only issue for the political parties in Nagaland following the route and the trend set by the NPF. The NDPP, followed the same trend of placing solution as top most priority like the NPF and understandably so, as both share the same DNA. The regional parties have, for the past 20 years have only played to the gallery about their “deep commitment” for the Naga political issue but have hopelessly done precious little to draw a political road map excepting throw more confusion with their unabashed pretension about their self appointed role as ‘facilitator’. The roles of the regional parties even including the nationalist BJP, certainly need to be questioned since it is now 20 years after their coalitions promised to bring solution. Unfortunately, there appears to be nothing to show except two paper agreements which the BJP government at the Centre itself, is unable and unwilling to decide on what to do with them. The over indulgence and focus on the Naga political issue is also a red herring and a ploy to play emotive politics while mis-governance is the order of the day. The 20 years have left governance in a shambles, dismembering of Nagaland state and three major tribe alliances taking centre stage as the constitutionally elected and mandated government spawns a neo-tribe of the growing nouveau riche. Unfortunately, for the voters what matters is who offers them the highest bid for the votes.

With the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of India Rajiv Kumar unambiguously putting an end to all speculations on whether or not assembly election will be held as scheduled ; the deck has been cleared for political parties to focus on winning the nod of the people.
