Besides people who were infected with Covid-19 complaining of various problems which health specialists term as post-Covid ailments; there are also increasing signs of other kinds of viruses and diseases appearing on the horizon. Two years after the Covid-19 pandemic appears to be looking to end, researchers estimate that, so far, infections caused by SARS-CoV-2 have contributed to 42 million or 4.2 crore new cases worldwide. Even after the pandemic is on its way out, reports by medical study suggests that people who have had Covid-19 are at increased risk of developing gastrointestinal (GI) disorders such as liver problems, acute pancreatitis, irritable bowel syndrome, acid reflux, and ulcers, within a year after infection compared with people who haven’t been infected, according to a study. The report informed that those who were infected with Covid are likely to experience an increased likelihood of constipation, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, bloating and vomiting. The study also indicated that Gastro Intestinal(GI) disorders were 36 per cent more likely in people with Covid-19 compared with those who had not been infected with the virus. This includes people who were and were not hospitalised because of the virus. Those who were infected with Covid were also at 62 per cent increased risk of developing ulcers in the stomach lining; 35 per cent heightened risk of suffering from acid reflux disease and 46 per cent increased risk of experiencing acute pancreatitis. It was also noted that Covid patients were also 54 per cent more likely to suffer from irritable bowel syndrome and 47 per cent more likely to experience inflammation of the stomach lining, and 36 per cent more likely to have an upset stomach without an obvious cause. Similarly, those who had Covid-19 were 54 per cent more likely to experience digestive symptoms such as constipation, diarrhoea, bloating, vomiting and abdominal pain, the findings showed. What has also led to raising of serious concern that Scientists have for the first time detected the closest known relatives of Covid in more than 12 per cent of people living in rural Myanmar, indicating that “zoonotic spillover is occurring”. According to reports, the findings, published in the International Journal of Infectious Diseases, showed that 12.1 per cent people were seropositive for sarbecoviruses -the family of Coronaviruses to which SARS-CoV belongs. These viruses, with potential to jump from animals to humans, had never previously been detected in humans. They have so far been detected in bats. In West Bengal, it was reported that ‘adenovirus’ is spreading across the state especially among children. There have been at least three fatalities while medical doctors suspect that the death toll could have been higher. Dr Manas Gumta, general secretary of the Association of Health Service Doctors alleged that the West Bengal government “underreported” the number of deaths caused by infection of the virus. Adenoviruses can cause a wide range of illnesses such as common cold or flu-like symptoms such as- fever, sore throat, acute bronchitis (inflammation of the airways of the lungs, sometimes called a “chest cold”) pneumonia (infection of the lungs). The coming months and years could yet unravel the extent of the threat viruses are posing on the world’s population.

Even as the world is beginning to come out of its worst health crisis caused by the SARS-CoV-2, the worst may not yet be over as the post pandemic period unravels hidden problems ahead.
