Joining the world in raising awareness about consumer rights and promote consumer protection, Nagaland observed \u201cWorld Consumer Rights Day\u201d under 2023 theme, \u201cEmpowering Consumers Through Clean Energy Transitions\u201d, Wednesday.
NVCO, KLC & PBC: Nagaland Voluntary Consumers\u2019 Organisation (NVCO) Kohima Law College (KLC) and Pro Bono Club (PBC) jointly celebrated \u201cWorld Consumer Rights Day\u201d at the College Auditorium with NVCO president, Kezhokhoto Savi as main speaker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Speaking at the programme, Kezhokhoto Savi said that \u201cRight to Public Services Legislation\u201d in India comprises statutory laws which guarantee time bound delivery of services for various public services rendered by the government to citizen, and provide mechanism for punishing the errant public servant found deficient in providing the service stipulated under the statute.
Savi stated that the legislation was meant to reduce corruption among the government officials and to increase transparency and public accountability.
He informed that more than 14 states in the country have enacted this legislation where Madhya Pradesh became the first state to enact \u201cRight to Service Act\u201d in 2010.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Savi said the common framework of the legislations in various states includes granting to right to public services, which are to be provided to the public by the designated official within the stipulated time frame.
Further, he informed that issuing caste, birth, marriage, domicile certificates, electric connection, votes card, ration card, copies of land records, etc., were some of the common public services which are to be provided within the fixed time frame as a right under the Act.
The function was chaired by David faculty-in-charge of Pro Bono Club and attended by college administrator, faculty and law students.
The celebration witnessed a skit by Nocklei M, Shahyong and Yakap Shankai highlighting various conduct of traders in exploiting consumers in the market while buying goods and availing services including unfair means of practices by the meat sellers especially shortage in weight. In a short presentation, Muwali Sangtam, Wanjen and Huluto highlighted various issues related to consumer rights emphasising on right to public services.
SJC (A) Jakhama: Department of economics in collaboration with department of commerce and alumni association, St. Joseph\u2019s College (A) celebrated \u201cWorld Consumer Rights Day\u201d by organising a seminar based on 2023 theme at the college Indoor Stadium.
Addressing the gathering as the speaker, advocate and notary public, Inavili Chophy, spoke on how there was an impact on Indian Economy during Covid-19 lockdown which led to increase in unemployment to 24%.
She also talked about how a country like India could influence clean energy transition and to support economic recovery through clean energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Chophy emphasised that India can gradually reduce its exposure to commodity imports and foreign-supply chains through distributed energy systems and the promotion of domestic manufacturing.
She ended her speech saying that circular economy solutions linked with clean energy should become a core feature of India\u2019s future economy.
The programme started with invocation by sister Vitsonino and welcome address by president, department of economics, Vishekhoto, and culminated with vote of thanks by vice president of Alumni Association, Moatangkit Lonkumer.

The students and faculty members led by head of the economics department, S Temsusenla Ao visited the Cambridge School and imparted awareness about the importance of clean energy and consumer empowerment to the young minds.
