A conference on \u201cemergency management and disaster preparedness\u201d was organised by Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), Home Department in collaboration with the Kigwema Students\u2019 Union (KSU) on June 7 at Kigwema Village Council Hall.
A press release by KSU former president, Teisovi Thorie stated that the conference sought to provide a platform to share knowledge, experience and discuss strategic and operational level issues to reduce the disaster risks, mitigate climate change, and adapt to its impacts.
Speaking at the conference, advisor, NSDMA, Z Nyusietho Nyuthe challenged the students that they must change their outlook towards disaster and must be equipped with in-depth knowledge on how to overcome the obstacle; the way of life in relation to its impact on the environment; social and economic values and how to exploit it for one\u2019s benefit keeping in mind its disastrous effect.
NDSMA joint chief executive officer, Johnny Ruangmei spoke on the topic, \u201cInvesting in Resilience and Preparedness\u201d and asserted that the colleges and schools should and must have a subject on emergency management and disaster preparedness.
Asserting the need to invest in resilience and preparedness for natural calamities and disaster, he said it was not a matter of \u201cif\u201d but \u201cwhen\u201d disaster would strike.
Speaking on the topic, \u201ccommunity-based adaptation for climate change and disaster risk reduction\u201d, assistant manager (training and education), Khrolou Koza Lohe deliberated on environment impact, water and soil conservation etc., and the need to construct \u201cearthquake proof house\u201d.
Around 500 students from Loyola Higher Secondary school, Jakhamal and Japf\u00fc Christian College, Kigwema attended the conference, which was chaired by KSU former president, Teisovi Thorie.
