A five-day training programme on \u201cPromotion of pig breeders in Nagaland\u201d under Tribal sub-plan was organised by ICAR Nagaland Centre from July 13 to 17.
25 pig breeders from Kiphire, Kohima, Dimapur, Phek, Chumukedima, Niuland, Mokukchung and Longleng, who were selected through specified criteria were attending the training.
Speaking on the inauguration day, joint director ICAR Nagaland Centre, Dr.H.Kalita emphasized the need of sufficient pig breeders in Nagaland to meet the demand of the state. He informed the participants that roughly 20 lakhs of pig population was needed in the state to sustainably meet the pork demand which cannot be met by government alone.
Director, NRC Mithun, Dr. Giris Patil informed the trainees about biosecurity maintenance at pig farm to prevent the introduction of infectious disease like African Swine Fever.
He urged the participants to take benefit of government of India scheme like National Mission on Livestock to strengthen their pig farms.
At the training, the participants were imparted hands on training on scientific pig farming including breed selection, housing management, nutrition management, disease management, biosecurity and waste management etc. Demonstration on artificial insemination in pig was also carried out at the training. The resource persons for training were from ICAR Nagaland centre, KVK Dimapur, NRC Mithun, SASRD and Veterinary College, Jalukie.
