The State\u2019s commercial hub is littered with garbage in plastic bags on roads or on vacant plots due to improper management of waste. In order to tackle the issue, sufficient number of garbage dumps\/waste collection areas need to be installed\/earmarked at different places in the city.
Even as the issue had been highlighted on several occasions, the irresponsible conduct of a section of the town\u2019s residents in accentuating the problem often tends to get overlooked. And the stench emanating from heaps of garbage dumped haphazardly by many residents particulalrly in Midland, Khermahal junction and Golaghat Road is a perfect specimen of lack of civic sense among a section of denizens.
Meanwhile, speaking to Nagaland Post, DMC\u2019s consultant for waste management Adrian Mahung claimed that bioremediation was being done on waste collected every day. He said new waste collection system was being introduced in the town for segregating waste.
He revealed that there would be a special vehicle to collect organic waste on a daily basis, while dry would be collected once in 10 days or as per requirements of colonies.
Mahung mentioned that a survey would be conducted on sewage management in Supermarket area, as waste collected daily in the area weighed around 800 kg, but on market days it exceeded by four times. He said DMC had come up with the idea of introducing collection of segregated waste in some specific areas for a stipulated period of time.
Maintaining that good residential sanitation tax (RST) was crucial in ensuring success of sanitation programmes, Mahung appealed to households, owners of shops and business establishment and other institutions where door-to-door garbage collection system had not been introduced to dispose garbage only in designated waste bin points between 6 pm and 6 am.
He warned that failure to follow the instruction would invite a penalty of Rs 1,000 for first violation, Rs 2,000 for second violation and Rs 5,000 for third violation from Dimapur Urban Council Chairmen Federation (DUCCF) and GBs\u2019 Union (Urban) Dimapur (GBUD).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
