The ongoing Manipur violence and the most recent, the August 1 and 2 Nuh communal violence only serving to further dent India’s image. India is to host the Group of 20 leaders summit in September but such incidents that are no longer few and far between, have only threatened to taint India’s efforts to be a strategic counterweight and investment alternative to China. India is the beloved home for practitioners of all major religions in the world where Indian culture accepts diversity of faiths and beliefs. Religious harmony and social cohesion are two core elements for progress and development. The country is quite diverse and is home to several communities and all the world’s religions – Hinduism, Islam, Sikhism, Christianity, Buddhism, Jainism, Zoroastrianism, Judaism and the Bahai faith besides animism. There are 3,000 castes and 25,000 sub-castes in India, each related to a specific occupation. Communal violence unfortunately have shown a rise after 2014. However, there is growing intolerance towards diverse religions leading to communal violence and ripples in social harmony. Indian culture is one of the most ancient cultures present in the world. Communalism is not scattered but a consistent fuelling of hatred, fear, insecurity, abuse of freedom of speech, browbeating the free and liberal media across the country, these are unmistakable but unhealthy signs of an emerging another India. What has happened is that since 2014, most national news channels have been uncritically, playing a huge role in creating a divisive, communal and anti-minority narrative. According to media observers, a majority of the Indian electronic media appear to have normalized an “anti-minority rhetoric” while routinely asserting the “imminent danger posed by internal as well as external enemies to the nation” using “systematic false claims and partisan facts.” The due process of law has been besmirched by law enforcement personnel playing a dubious role as those arrested mostly belong to minority communities. To understand why these continue to happen, it should be understood that despite all the pretences of pluralism, communalism is ingrained in the country’s polity that led to partition of India and Pakistan. The vestiges of the communal partition has been carried on for many decades as it has been a politically gainful pursuit during elections. Unfortunately, the embers of communal hatred stoked by political parties-whether left, right or centre- has led to the injury becoming incurable. Rise of communalism serve to remind that it continues not because members of communities want it that way but because some elements including politicians refuse to give up communalising incidents. What has been happening across several parts of India are not irregular frequencies nor isolated incidents but a consistent fuelling of hatred, fear, insecurity, abuse of freedom of speech, browbeating all institutions across the country. These are unmistakable but unhealthy signs. However, the only saving grace that has reasserted itself from political control is the judiciary presently headed by an independent and secular Chief Justice of India D.Y.Chandrachud and his colleagues when every public institution in India has been under constant attack and folded up.

Despite its emergence as the world’s fastest growing economy in addition to being the world’s largest democracy, India’s record has been dented by a series of communal violence which, between 2016 to 2020 recorded around 3500 incidents.
