The education system in the state is in need of some serious actionable change, not merely on the strength of talking about change but to ensure that an efficient system is put in place to effect change. What needs to be done however, is to try and analyse and understand what are the areas that need improvement. There are several issues and factors that need comprehension to improve the standard of education. One of the most heard of remedy has been on emphasising on quality of teachers and so they are encouraged to do more than obtain B.Ed or M.Ed. This has been a popular theme which suggests that quality teachers can impart quality education as with the saying, that one cannot expect oranges from a mango tree etc. In contrast with the concept, private educational institutions have been doing a better job than government institutions of imparting better education. Private institutions have larger number of untrained teachers than government educational institutions. Also the teacher-to- student ratio in government schools is much lesser than that of private schools which should complement the creation of a learning environment inside the classrooms. The other notion is that mere academic degrees do not serve any purpose for gainful employment. This has led to focus on skill development as part of curriculum. While skill development may be an added subject for those who wish to undertake small enterprises or employment, it does not fully address the issue of improving the standard of education unless the system is tuned to the changing environment. Development of skills being talked about are basic ones which are available in technical schools around the country. These two- academic and skill, belong to two different worlds unless, as stated, skill is specialised to undertake professional jobs or enterprises. Quality education enables the child to develop all of his or her attributes and skills to achieve their potential as human beings and members of society. The mission is to enable each, without exception, to develop specific talents to the full and to realize the creative potential of every student so that he/she takes responsibility of their own lives and achievement of their personal aims. The concept means that the process first identifies learners’ cognitive development as the major explicit objective of all education systems. The second emphasises education’s role in promoting values and attitudes of responsible citizenship and in nurturing creative and emotional development. At the 1999 Naga Hoho conference, a concept note on education was presented by the Editor of this newspaper. The concept among several suggestions, visualised incentivising performing government teachers with service rewards; greatly decreasing and eventually closing down of government educational institutions in urban towns such as Kohima, Dimapur and Mokokcung so as to reduce number of teachers ; grants for performing private schools in order to subsidise fees of students etc. Later in 2000 the Education Reforms Commission set up by the government adopted several points from the concept note and presented the recommendation to the state government. However, nothing was heard of that recommendations. Changes can come and all that is needed is a political will to straighten things out.

For a number of years, there has been concerns over the poor standard of higher education in Nagaland and some efforts were made to address them but still fall far short of the desired result.
