During the interaction, State commissioner, Diethono Nakhro, highlighted on the importance of improving media literacy on disability issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>She pointed out that media was a vital tool for raising awareness, countering stigma and misinformation at the same time help in changing social misconceptions and present people with disabilities as individuals who are part of human diversity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>She said images and stories in the media could deeply influence public opinion and establish societal norms and by increasing awareness and understanding of disability issues, media could actively contribute to an effective and successful integration of persons with disabilities in all aspects of societal life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>Nakhro pointed out that people with disabilities were often negatively stereotyped, not appropriately represented, treated as objects of pity, charity or medical treatment that have to overcome a tragic and disabling condition and also presented as superheroes who have accomplished great feats so as to inspire the non-disabled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>Pointing out conditions that fall under disability, Nakhro said it includes impairment of body and mind that makes it more difficult for the person with the condition to do certain activities and interact with the world around them.<br>She said there were many different types of disabilities and some people have more than one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>These disabilities could result from accidents, illness or genetic disorders and while some disabilities are readily visible, some others may be invisible or not easily apparent to others, she disclosed.<br>Nakhro also highlighted the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act 2016 which is the overarching legal framework on disability rights i India which was enacted on December 28, 2016 and came into force from April 19, 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>She pointed out that the Act promotes and protects the rights and dignity of people with disabilities in various aspects of life, educational, social legal economic, cultural and political.<br>The Act also provides for full and effective participation and inclusion in society which applies to government, non-government and private organisations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>During the workshop introduction and welcome note was proposed by Viketukho Nakhro while a short speech was delivered by general secretary, Kohima Press Club, Vish\u00fc Rita Krocha.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A workshop on media and disability was organised by office of the State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities at Hotel Japf\u00fc, here on Wednesday.
