If you are a political leader, you may be tempted to throw your hands in the air in protest at a question that makes an assumption that many political leaders are corrupt. However, the sad reality is that corruption at the highest levels is a global phenomenon.
Corruption is the unethical and unfair means for illegitimate personal gain. Corruption is not an ordinary crime; it robs the poor of their rights, breeds other crimes and is the greatest impediment to justice and democracy. Being corrupt is a decision or choice that an individual makes.
According to a survey conducted in 2017, the following factors have been attributed as causes of corruption: (i) Greed for money; (ii) Higher levels of market and political monopolization; (iii) Low press freedom; (iv) Contagion from corrupt neighboring countries; (v) Lack of proper policies against corruptions, etc.
There are thousands of leaders in the world today who stand firm despite having corruption charges filed against them. The issue of corruption in Indian politics is a serious one and has far-reaching consequences for the country. It undermines the integrity of the political system and erodes public trust in the government.
It is important for the government and civil society to take strong action to combat corruption and hold corrupt politicians accountable for their actions.
This can be done through the enforcement of strict law and the implementation of effective measures to prevent corruption, such as improved transparency and accountability in the political process.
Only by addressing the root causes of corruption can India hope to build a more honest and transparent political system.
