The product was formally launched by Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) Administrator, W Manpai Phom, at Duncan Basti Dimapur, on Monday.

Speaking at the launching event, Phom commended the introduction of biodegradable bags and products as a potential solution to the current problem, highlighting the need for viable alternatives rather than a mere ban on single-use plastic.

He informed that Bio-Plasto product has received approval and certification from the Central Pollution Control Board, along with clearance from the Nagaland Pollution Control Board, underscoring its compliance with environmental standards.

He acknowledged the pressing issue of single-use plastic, despite government directives to curb its use. He noted that the complexity of the problem has hindered effective waste management. While DMC has undertaken special drives to curb the inflow and use of banned items, practical implementation in the field remains a challenge, he informed.

Phom also stressed on the necessity of addressing different categories of products, such as paper and cloth bags for dry goods, and the need for single-use plastic for wet products like meat.
Phom acknowledged that while change was never easy, he urged wider dissemination of information about the product to increase public awareness.

He also encouraged traders and business establishments to adopt the product, recognizing that initial hurdles, including acceptance by public and traders, may arise. The administrator dwelled on the importance of distinguishing genuine Bio-Plasto products from potential imitations, proposing the implementation of unique codes for identification. He also proposed the introduction of specific insignia to facilitate easy verification of the product, making the transition towards sustainable alternatives more seamless.

Phom further stated that the enforcement of the ban on plastic products would be rigorously upheld, while expressing optimism that the recent product would not only serve as a valuable addition to waste management efforts but also contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable future for the state as a whole.

Meanwhile, proprietor, JoY Enterprise, Johnny Erui, briefed on the product and informed that the Bio-Plasto bags were manufactured using organic and bio-degradable products. He maintained that he ventured into the business to create awareness amongst people on the benefits of using the product and how it could eradicate the use of single use plastics.

Earlier, the programme was chaired by Meribeni Ngullie and invocation and dedicatory prayer offered by secretary, Dimapur Lotha Prayer Warrior, Khonsao Ovung.

In a significant move towards combating the escalating challenges of waste management, JoY Enterprise introduced the Bio-Plasto product, a plastic like bag which can be biodegraded after use, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional plastic bags that are detrimental to the environment.
