A six-day Skill Training of Rural Youth (STRY) conducted by Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA) blocks in association with State Agricultural Management and Extension Training Institute (SAMETI) Medziphema and National Institute of Agricultural Extension Management (MANAGE), Hyderabad at Satakha Old under Satakha block and Shangnyu Village, Mon block culminated on February 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Satakha Old: Delivering a keynote address during the STRY on \u201cmushroom production techniques\u201d at Satakha Old under Satakha block, ATMA deputy director, Vikaho Chophi said the training was aimed at imparting skill-based training in compliance with national policy on skill development and entrepreneurship-2015 in agriculture and allied areas for creation of skilled manpower, generate entrepreneurs and employment of rural youths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Resource persons for the training were Assistant Technology Managers (ATMs) Satakha block, Tovi V Jimomi and Vialo Sumi. They spoke on topics such as – mushroom: concepts, types, uses, mushroom cultivation: opportunities and constraints, acquaintance with edible, non-edible, medicinal and poisonous mushrooms, establishment of commercial mushroom production units, importance of mushroom cultivation, mushroom cultivation as an agribusiness activity, mushroom spawn: quality attributes, storage and transport, acquaintance with mushroom contamination, mushroom processing and preservation and value addition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A practical hands-on demonstration on oyster mushroom was also performed by the participants. In the valedictory session, ATMA project director and district agricultural officer, Zunheboto, L. Nunsang Jamir encouraged the youths to utilise the opportunity to develop their skills and aim to generate income out of it. Altogether 15 youths were trained and awarded certificates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Shangnyu: While highlighting the objective of STRY on “value addition in millets” at Shangnyu Village, Mon block, Block Technology Manager (BTM), Vimeno Zao said the training aimed to impart skill-based training to rural youths in agri-based vocational areas to promote income generation and employment in rural areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She also apprised the participants on the nutritional and health benefits and the rising popularity and demand of the crop across the globe. In the theory sessions, resource persons, Assistant Technology Managers (ATMs), Manlen Longcha and Khriezelhou Seyie explained about the importance of millet and its potential not only as a sustainable and income crop but also for nutritional and food security. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The different types of millets and the various millet-based products that can be made were discussed at length. In the practical sessions, hands-on demonstrations on making of millet cake, millet drink, millet pancake and millet dessert using foxtail and pearl millets were conducted.
