Over several decades have witnessed how some \u201cconcerned\u201d citizens or well meaning members of society had deliberated on \u201cthe situation\u201d in Dimapur explained by existence of extra constitutional or self-proclaimed parallel authorities, extortion rackets; rampant illegal or unauthorised collections by Naga political groups, unions, associations, village authorities even including government agencies such as municipal council, veterinary & animal husbandry; taxes department, excise, geology & mining, forest etc including rising number of suspected Illegal Bangladeshi Immigrants(IBIs) who have taken deep roots in the cosmopolitan matrix. In addition \u201c the situation\u201d also speaks of rampant encroachment of public lands as well as government lands housing important offices that provide crucial services such a medical, engineering, airport and railways to name some. Most roads inside Dimapur are in deplorable condition and the less said of the unhygienic condition, revealed by huge pile of uncollected garbage, the better. Dimapur is among the oldest of towns in the state but till today, majority of people don\u2019t have tapped water supply because they depend on tube, ring or bore wells. After partition of erstwhile Dimapur district for creation of Ch\u00fcmukedima and Niuland, its area shrank from 927 km2 (Source-Deptt. of Land Record & Survey) to about 70 km2 (27 sq miles). The partition of Dimapur district has left it as the smallest district in the state of Nagaland. Despite being the smallest in terms of area, in Nagaland, the estimated population of Dimapur urban, as per Dimapur Municipal Council in 2024 is approximately 1,72,000. Unfortunately, essential services to public have been grossly inadequate for decades but people of Dimapur have shown excellent resilience to eventually manager their business. The main importance of Dimapur is trade and commerce and therefore, connectivity by road, rail and air forms a very critical component of economic development. This calls for improvement of passenger facilities at Dimapur airport that has been ignored for decades and during which and as in all cases, some people in connivance with officials, started settling in government land which has blocked expansion. Dimapur railway station which provides services to over 10,000 travellers a day can no longer expand to meet the growing demands because the same fate as with the airport has befallen it. The government seems lukewarm against eviction of settlers. Had this been done three decades back, then the issue would have been handled better. In contrast the government is all gung-ho for the Dhansiri-Zubza-Kohima railway line and the Greenfield airport at Ciethu near Kohima. There is no law against developing connectivity at other places but this should not be on extraneous considerations, despite lacking credible economic viability. Also, Dimapur is also experiencing a huge increase in vehicular traffic and at times, it takes hours to go from one end of the city to the other. One of the causes for congestion of roads is absence of proper parking areas. Dimapur needs at least three big parking lots within the City to ease congestion. Since roads are always getting clogged with vehicles everyday, it would be helpful to consider construction of flyovers over some parts of Dimapur city to ease traffic and inter-connect with suburban areas. Unless Dimapur is developed, Nagaland will face uphill task in economic development as this requires prioritising objectives based on economic ground realities and not other considerations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
