This number underscores the pressing public health challenge faced in the region.

It was revealed that out of the 48,777 persons tested, 41,443 were general clients and 7,334 ANC, 919 (2.2%) were general clients and 41 (0.6%) antenatal care (ANC). Further Dr. Zaiwang disclosed that as per ICTCs and hospital reports, out of a total 10,606 high-risk group (HRGs) tested for HIV from April 2023 to March 2024, 93 (1%) persons tested positive.

The testing was done for nine targeted intervention (TI) groups, including injecting drug users (IDUs), female injecting drug users (FDU), men who have sex with men (MSM), transgenders (TG), female sex workers (FSW), truckers and migrants.

Referring to reports, Dr. Zaiwang said that Nagaland’s HIV prevalence rate at 1.61%, was high, making it the second highest HIV prevalence state (general population) in the country while Mizoram topped the list of states with the highest prevalence (2.34%).
With regard to cases among pregnant women, it was noted that Nagaland has the highest rate of HIV transmission in this demographic.

Dr. Zaiwang stated that as per National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) Sankalak Report, out of a population of 1,77,087 (Dimapur, Chümoukedima and Niuland), the estimated number of people living with HIV(PLHIVs) was 9,662.

Also out of the 9,662 PLHIVs in the three districts, 3,034 PLHIVs as of March 2024 were currently on antiretroviral therapy (ART) she said.
The official expressed concern that the remaining 6,628 PLHIVs had not come forward to avail ART.
Dr. Zaiwaing said that though the official number of PLHIVs stood at 9,662, she expressed concern that the actual number of PLHIVs in these districts and the entire state could be much more because many were unaware of their HIV status.

Dr. Zaiwang cited some of the reasons for underreporting of HIV cases as attributed to underlying psychosocial barriers to testing, lack of knowledge about HIV and location of testing sites, no perceived physical symptoms, fear of testing positive, discrimination and stigma, confidentiality, etc.

In order to break down the barriers to testing, Dr. Zaiwang revealed that NSACS was initiating the “Integrated Health Campaign”, which commenced on May 21 and would culminate on June 29.
During the IHC, the nodal officer said integrated health camps would be organised at various camp sites/villages to reach out to the general population with a comprehensive service package to avoid any stigma and discrimination.

Dr. Zaiwang mentioned that extended outreach at selected hotpots would include reaching out to the specific population of high risk groups (HRGs) and their spouses, injecting and sexual partners, their networks and peers.

Speaking on the occasion, EAC Dimapur Imlijungla Lemtur maintained that the success of such programmes hinged on the collaboration of various stakeholders, including medical departments, NGOs, the general public, and unions. She stressed that the joint effort was crucial for the effective implementation and success of any government programme.

On behalf of the district administration, Imlijungla encouraged all stakeholders to actively participate in pushing these initiatives forward, emphasising that such programmes should not be seen as solely government-driven, but rather a collective responsibility.

Earlier, keynote address was delivered by NSACS project director Dr Ahu Sekhose. The programme was also attended by DC Dimapur Tinojongshi Chang, representatives from various organizations and other officials.

Around 9662 PLHIVs in Dimapur, Chümoukedima & Niuland districts HIV transmission in Nagaland shows an alarming trend when 960 individuals (general and ANC) from Dimapur, Chümoukedima and Niuland districts tested HIV positive out of the 48,777 individuals tested between April 2023 and March 2024.
