NUTA’s demand came at the backdrop of the President of Indian and Visitor of Nagaland University Pratibha Patel approving a CBI inquiry into various financial irregularities in the university and also a show cause notice served to the Vice Chancellor of NU, Prof K. Kannan for violation of the University Act.
Unbiased CBI inquiry must be allowed to take place to clean up the corruption destroying the development of this furthermost Central University, NUTA stated in a representation to the Visitor which was submitted through the Rector of NU & Governor of Nagaland, K.Sankaranarayanan at the Raj Bhavan here today.
“For conduct of a free, fair and impartial CBI inquiry, it is a pre-requisite to ask all the concerned Officers under scanner to vacate their office and remove the Vice Chancellor of the Nagaland University from the chair, so that they may not tamper with the records and influence the University employees to depose in their favour before the CBI inquiry”, the representation stated.
The association claimed that the failure to send the VC and University Officers under scanner on leave during the recent inquiry by a Fact Finding Committee has led to false information and records, victimization, threats, harassment and illegal suspension of eight NUTA leaders on false charge.
Moreover, it has led to submission of false witnesses of University employees and students leaders without their consent by the Vice Chancellor which was later withdrawn, NUTA alleged.
Later addressing a press conference at the History Department, representatives of NUTA officials from all the three campuses led by its CEC President Rosemary Dzuvichu claimed that the Governor and Rector said that the matter was very serious and that he assured them to definitely take up the matter with the Visitor.
While welcoming the Visitor’s approval and directive for CBI probe into various financial irregularities in the NU, NUTA president termed the act as “Landmark” and expressed hope that the probe would bring change in the university.
The NUTA official also said that the Federation of Central University Teachers’ Association (FEDCUTA) was fully behind the NUTA, and that the association during its meeting with the Union MHRD had clearly put straight its demand for removal of the VC and tainted officers before the CBI probe failing which the association would launch a nationwide agitation.
Revealing its further course of action, the NUTA officials informed that it would first meet all the tainted officers including the VC and demand for their stepping down on moral ground. Moreover, it would have series of consultations with the non-teaching staff of the varsity, students’ organizations, NGOs and other civil societies.
In this regard, the association appealed to all concerned including the state government, bureaucrats, students’ organizations, NGOs and civil societies to support NUTA in its quest to clean up the university.
Reiterating that the demand of the university teachers were genuine and that whatever it was doing today was for the betterment of the future generation, NUTA also reiterated that the association or its members were free from any political affiliation or alienation. “We’ve received lots of threat and we even have visitors at our home asking as to step down from the post which we’re holding”, the NUTA leaders claimed.
NUTA also said that it has gone beyond the boundary of tribal lines trying to clean up the university. “There are lots of critics of NUTA for its initiative today, but if we don’t do today, the same criticism we’ll face tomorrow as to why we didn’t do and just remained silent”, said NUTA general secretary N. Venuh.
Altogether, four University Officials including the Vice Chancellor, Registrar, Controller of Examination and an Assistant Controller of Examination of Nagaland University were reportedly named in the Fact Finding Committee Report submitted to the MHRD earlier. Based on the report, the Visitor of Nagaland University and President of India had recently approved CBI probe into various allegations of financial irregularities in the University.
Moreover, the MHRD also served a show cause notice with 10 days dateline to VC Prof. K. Kannan on the alleged violation of the University Act for rejection of the recommendation of the Selection Committee in selection to the post of Lecturer in Tenyidie department and re-advertising the post without seeking the direction of the Visitor and also for setting up Engineering and Management Campus at Dimapur without approval of the Statutory authorities Academic Council and Executive Council of the university.
The ministry while serving the show cause notice to the Vice Chancellor, NU and also informing the University of the Visitor’s approval and directive for CBI probe to identify and prosecute those responsible, directed the VC to instruct all concerned to extend full cooperation to the CBI in facilitating its investigation and also submit an action taken report to the MHRD for submission to the Visitor at the earliest.
Among the major financial irregularities mentioned in the FFC reports included fraudulent withdrawal of University fund amounting to Rs.33.77 lakhs. Another major irregularity was detected following the missing of more than 100 computer sets from the university Engineering and Management campus Dimapur last year in which, the university had instituted an Inquiry which could not made any headway.

Nagaland University Teachers’ Association (NUTA) Friday demanded that all the tainted university officials whose names were mentioned in the Fact Finding Committee’s (FCC) report and currently under scanner should be asked to step down on morale grounds to pave way for a free, fair and unbiased conduct of inquiry by the CBI.
