Dimapur Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) has welcomed the decision of the state government to impose complete ban on all single-use plastic (SUP) carry bags and single-use plastic bottles and soft drink below 1 litre, effective from August 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a press release, DCCI said that the ban on SUP, if implemented effectively, will prove to be a boon for Dimapur. Noting that plastic was the major component of all waste, affecting ecosystems, DCCI said a couple of years ago, the government also attempted to implement a ban on SUPs, the DCCI has therefore requested all business community in Dimapur to abide by the government\u2019s order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
DCCI also informed that by taking advantage of the order, many \u201czealous unions and organizations\u201d have started harassing the shopkeepers and business houses by conducting unauthorized checks and penalizing them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Not only this, numerous instances have been reported in Dimapur where individuals or unions act like legally appointed nodal officers or agencies to enforce government\u2019s directives, DCCI said.
In this regard, DCCI cautioned that it will not entertain or tolerate any checks conducted by any organization other than the district administration and police Commissionerate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Pointing out that every citizen has the right to voice their concern for a cleaner environmental, but not at the expense of penalizing traders with huge fines and penalties, DCCI has requested the district administration and other concerned departments to conduct awareness programmes on the ill-effects of SUP as many traders were unaware why the ban has been imposed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It also urged the authorities to hold group meetings with shopkeepers and traders, explaining to them in detail on various aspects of the ban and penalties for violation.
