Today after decades of uninterrupted power under a regional coalition, Nagaland has not been able to achieve the desired level of achievement which can be noticeable in other north eastern states despite the fact that Nagaland has been given generous funding owing to its “uniqueness” as a state that has to grapple with the emerging political problem. The Business Association of Nagas (BAN), more or less reiterated the issue in a representation to the 16th Finance Commission when the panel recently visited the state. In the representation, BAN highlighted the need for sector-specific grants to bridge Nagaland’s infrastructure gap and focussing on critical areas such as roads, power, and communication.BAN president Mongkum Jamir also argued that such investments are vital for the state to overcome unique developmental challenges and contribute meaningfully to India’s economic growth. As with decades of alibi, BAN’s representation underscored persistent issues faced by the state due to long-standing political complexities which have delayed infrastructure and economic development. The plea to reset infrastructure development due to inadequate infrastructure-from unreliable roadways and power shortages to insufficient communication networks, were identified as basic factors which have hampered the state’s growth, limiting opportunities for equitable progress across urban and rural areas alike. What BAN then proposed was for targeted funding to address these core issues, including substantial road upgrades across all districts to ensure year-round access and a reliable infrastructure base that could stimulate economic activity. Infrastructure development in other north eastern states, most , except Assam, that attained statehood a decade after Nagaland, are decades ahead which reflect not seniority but merit. Over and above material and infrastructural development, the need to upscale the human resource is a vital factor for all round development. In this regard, BAN echoed the importance of skill development, for attracting industries and enabling Nagaland’s workforce to meet industry needs. BAN also stressed on creation of a National Trade and Exhibition Centre, the operationalization of four border trade centers, and the establishment of a dry port in Dimapur. These steps, he argues, would not only facilitate local business growth but also bolster cross-border trade, enhancing economic ties between India and Myanmar. Addressing Nagaland’s strategic potential in this manner would align with India’s broader economic goals by integrating Northeast states like Nagaland more fully into the national economic strategy. Highlighting what had been written over a series of reports by this newspaper, BAN urged for upgrade of Dimapur Airport to international standards to facilitate both business travel and cargo handling. The other long forgotten but very crucial need which BAN highlighted was on enhancing the Tuli railway line to improve connectivity and resource utilization, especially for regions rich in natural resources but lacking adequate transport options. In short, in order to bridge the gap between goal and achievement, there is need for adequate investment in basic infrastructural areas which have been inadequate.

There are various reasons or factors that have negatively impacted the desired development of Nagaland especially in the light of massive funds which were provided to the state since 2004 during the NDA-I under prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee, then followed by NDA-II and now NDA-III under prime minister Narendra Modi.
