Sotilo Seb emerged as the champion of the first ever Rengma Wrestling Championship (Nagaland style) during the Ngada Festival-cum-Mini Hornbill 2024, held at RSA Ground, Tseminyu on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Acheno Semy, Jochuhyu Semy, and Shanilo Kath secured second, third, and fourth places respectively. The championship offered cash prizes of Rs. 10,000, Rs. 7,000, and Rs. 5,000 for the top three wrestlers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The championship, which coincided with the Ngada Festival-cum-Mini Hornbill Festival, drew an enthusiastic crowd and participation from across the district. The event, organized by the Rengma Wrestling Association (RWA), featured 17 wrestlers competing in the open category. In addition to the wrestling matches, the championship included a variety of traditional contests, blending cultural celebration with athletic prowess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bamboo Grease Pole Climbing: Kasha Daho from Kandi Range excelled in this thrilling event. Strength Display with Bamboo Pole: Kasha Daho clinched the first position, followed by Phenshunyu Lojvu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bamboo Stick Walking: Kithagha took the top spot, with Kasha Daho coming in second.
High Kick Competition: The Tseminyu Union emerged victorious, with Tsokhinzun securing second place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Talking to media persons, RWA president Ruchuyhung Seb, expressed pride in successfully organizing the association\u2019s first open championship. He recalled how wrestling was once said to be an integral part of Rengma tradition but had been discontinued for generations. \u201cWe hear stories that our parents used to play, but for some time, this tradition was lost. Now, we are picking it up again,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The RWA, launched on October 14, 2024, collaborated with the Nagaland Wrestling Association (NWA) to provide 10 days of intensive training under expert coaches. This partnership not only ensured technical excellence but also financial and logistical support from NWA allowing the championship to materialize within just two months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Seb thanked NWA for coming forward in the formation of RWA and also lending a helping hand even as the association strives to move forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Despite its success, the event was not without challenges. Mobilizing players, securing funds, and engaging skilled coaches proved to be significant hurdles. However, the association remains optimistic about the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe are planning to encourage our younger players to not only compete locally but also participate in NWA championships. If they are capable and in good condition, we will support them to go further,\u201d Seb assured. With the unwavering support of the Rengma Students\u2019 Association (RSA) and the Rengma Hoho, the RWA envisions expanding wrestling\u2019s reach and reviving its cultural significance.
