For over three decades, this newspaper has consistently called for the modernization of the airport to meet the growing needs of passengers and to promote economic activity.

The construction of Dimapur Airport has been delayed for several years due to litigation over land encroachment. The proposed plan was divided into two phases. Phase I proposes for 107 acres of land to expand the runway by 310 meters, while Phase II plans for an additional 230 acres for hangar construction, runway strip clearance for Airbus A320 operations, and city-side development.

The quantity of land needed for the airport’s expansion has, however, been severely constrained. Growth ambitions have been severely impeded by unchecked encroachment, which has reduced the useable land from its initial 621.58 acres to a mere 300 acres. In contrast, neighbouring states have capitalized on opportunities to develop their airports.

Dibrugarh Airport, occupying 386 acres, boasts a 7,500-foot runway and two aerobridges. Similarly, Jorhat Airport has expanded significantly, leaving Dimapur trailing far behind. The lack of urgency and proactive measures from the Nagaland government has not only deprived the airport of essential development but has also left passengers to endure subpar infrastructure.

For instance, passengers deplaning at Dimapur Airport still walk to the terminal, while Dimapur Railway Station’s Platform No. 2 has been without a canopy for over three decades, leaving travellers exposed to inclement weather. The recently concluded Hornbill Festival once again underscored the pressing need for Dimapur Airport’s expansion.

The festival attracts a growing number of domestic and international travellers each year, putting immense pressure on the airport’s inadequate facilities. While the state government has promised to resolve land disputes and hand over the required 300 acres to the Airports Authority of India (AAI), progress remains uncertain.

Land litigation, which has stalled airport development for decades, is only now receiving attention. An admission by the former Director of AAI Dimapur in August 2021 to this publication paints a grim picture of state apathy. He revealed that the Nagaland government had ignored repeated letters and reminders from AAI since 2008, urging the provision of land for airport modernization and runway improvements.

This neglect reflects a larger issue: the state’s failure to prioritize air and rail connectivity in its economic development plans. Many states with far fewer resources have aggressively pursued infrastructure development and sought central government support. Nagaland must follow suit. Improving Dimapur Airport is not just about boosting connectivity; it is a crucial step toward unlocking the region’s economic potential and providing the infrastructure that its citizens deserve. Without immediate and decisive action, Dimapur risks being left behind in an era of rapid regional transformation. The clock is ticking, and Dimapur cannot afford further delays. Will the state government rise to the challenge, or will this remain yet another missed opportunity? Only time will tell.

While airports in neighbouring states have been seen rapid expansion which hugely contributes to bolster economic growth, Dimapur Airport in Nagaland lags far behind, mired as it is in litigation that has resulted in stagnation of development.
