This impressive growth has been fuelled by the Startup Nagaland Policy, spearheaded by the Department of Industries and Commerce. The policy has established five incubators across the state, providing crucial support to budding entrepreneurs.
Despite facing significant challenges such as poor infrastructure, unreliable power supply, and logistical difficulties, the younger generation in Nagaland is increasingly turning to entrepreneurship as a viable career path. This shift is part of a broader trend in India, which boasts the third-largest startup ecosystem globally. With 1,25,000 startups creating 1.3 million jobs and contributing ₹3.03 lakh crore to the economy, the sector is growing at an annual rate of 12-15%. Nagaland is no exception to this trend.
Currently, over 300 startups are registered in Nagaland, collectively employing 1,200 people and generating ₹58 crore in annual revenue. While only a few have gained national recognition, these startups are making significant contributions to local economic development. Notable ventures include ReDimension Games Studio in Kohima, which won the “Upcoming Game of the Year Award” at the India Game Developer Conference and received an incubation offer in South Korea. NagaEd is another standout, being the first Nagaland-based startup to attract Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). Additionally, agriculture-based and e-commerce startups like Jome Foods and Ilandlo are gaining traction in India’s startup ecosystem. Cultural startups are also making waves by leveraging technology to market handcrafted tribal jewellery, thereby preserving Nagaland’s heritage while creating sustainable employment for artisans.
However, the journey is not without its hurdles. Limited access to funding remains a significant challenge, as startups struggle to secure venture capital or bank loans despite some government support. Infrastructure issues, including poor roads, unreliable electricity, and weak digital connectivity, further hinder business operations. Many young entrepreneurs also lack the necessary business knowledge, exposure, and mentorship, highlighting the need for greater investment in both soft and basic infrastructure. Additionally, there is a cultural shift required, as parents often prioritize government jobs over entrepreneurship, despite the low investment needed to start businesses online.
Looking ahead, the future of Nagaland’s startup ecosystem holds promise if key measures are implemented. Building an Angel/Venture Fund could encourage private investors and government-backed funding programs to help startups scale. Investing in infrastructure to improve roads, electricity, and digital connectivity is essential for supporting efficient business operations. Strengtheningentrepreneurial education by introducing it in school and college curriculums would help build a skilled workforce. Regional collaboration with other Northeast states could create a unified startup ecosystem, enabling resource-sharing and expansion.
Nagaland’s startup journey is a testament to the state’s resilience, creativity, and entrepreneurial spirit. The Startup Nagaland Policy has laid a strong foundation, attracting investment and empowering local entrepreneurs. However, challenges like high unemployment and dependence on central government support persist. Many successful individuals also bear the burden of supporting extended families, adding another layer of complexity.
Despite these hurdles, startups have the potential to transform Nagaland’s economic landscape. By fostering innovation, improving infrastructure, and nurturing a culture of entrepreneurship, Nagaland can create sustainable opportunities for future generations. This is a pivotal moment for the state to redefine its narrative and unlock its full potential.
Entrepreneur School of Business, Duncan Basti, Dimapur

Nagaland has witnessed a remarkable surge in entrepreneurship, with the Honourable Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, highlighting a 200% growth in startups within the state.
