But do not have God speak to us or we will die.\u201d \u2014 Exodus 20:18-19<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are times when we\u2019re not consciously disobeying God; we\u2019re just not paying attention. God has given us his commandments: there they are, set down in Scripture, along with a clear directive that we should follow them. \u201cIf you love me, keep my commands\u201d (John 14:15). And still, we look the other way. We don\u2019t do this out of willful disobedience. We do it because we don\u2019t love and respect God.<br>\u201cSpeak to us yourself,\u201d the Israelites told Moses. \u201cBut do not have God speak to us.\u201d We show God how little we love him when we prefer to listen only to his servants. We\u2019ll listen to personal testimonies, but we won\u2019t listen to God himself. Why are we so terrified of him speaking directly to us? Because we know that if he does, we\u2019ll have a choice to make: obey or disobey. If it\u2019s only a servant\u2019s voice we hear, we feel free to disregard it. \u201cWell, that\u2019s just your own idea,\u201d we say. \u201cEven though I don\u2019t deny it\u2019s probably God\u2019s truth.\u201d<br>Am I putting God in the humiliating position of having treated me as his child, while I\u2019ve been ignoring him?
