The Pharisees were religious and proper, but Jesus saw straight through them: \u201cYou are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean\u201d (Matthew 23:27).<br>What is it that blinds me in my day? Do I have a strange god\u2014not a disgusting monster, but a mindset that rules and dominates me? More than once, the Lord has brought me face-to-face with this strange god, but instead of yielding to the Lord, I scraped through. Now I am still in the strange god\u2019s possession, still blind to the thing that would bring me peace.<br>\u201cIf you, even you, had only known \u2026\u201d These words imply culpability; God holds us responsible for what we do not see. It is appalling that we can be in the place where the Spirit of God should be ruling us and still be increasing our condemnation in his sight.<br>\u201cNow it is hidden from your eyes.\u201d God goes directly to the heart, and the tears of Jesus follow. The terrible sadness of the might-have-been! God never reopens doors that have been closed. He opens other doors, but he reminds us that there are doors we\u2019ve shut that need never have been shut.<br>Never be afraid when God brings back the past. Let memory have its way. It is a minister of God, with its rebuke and sorrow.
