These individuals, cloaked in the language of faith and adorned in the garments of religious authority, preach from pulpits while serving personal agendas. They are, in every sense, wolves in sheep’s clothing — predators in piety.
But this is not merely a moral lapse or ethical dilemma. It is a deep theological offense, a distortion of sacred truth. The Gospel is not a product to be pitched, nor is the pulpit a performance stage. When pastors chase applause over accountability, they betray not only their calling but the very heart of the Gospel itself.
Biblical Warnings Ignored
Scripture is not silent about such deception. Jesus, in His Sermon on the Mount, gives a stark warning: “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves” (Matthew 7:15). The Greek word used for “beware” (prosechete) is in the imperative — it’s not a suggestion, but a command. This is an issue of survival, not subtlety.
False teachers were a real and recurring problem in both Old and New Testaments. In the Old Testament, the prophet Jeremiah rebuked leaders who “heal the wound of my people lightly, saying, ‘Peace, peace,’ when there is no peace” (Jeremiah 6:14). They soothed consciences instead of confronting sin. Ezekiel declared, “Woe to the shepherds of Israel who only take care of themselves! Should not shepherds take care of the flock?” (Ezekiel 34:2). This self-serving leadership was a betrayal of covenant responsibility.
In the New Testament, Paul’s concern for doctrinal purity was so intense that he wept over the coming deception: “I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock” (Acts 20:29). He warned Timothy that a time would come when people “will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions” (2 Timothy 4:3). That time is no longer coming — it is here.
The Prosperity Pulpit and the Marketplace Church
Today, false pastors don’t necessarily wear villainous expressions or preach blatant heresy. Instead, they peddle a designer gospel — one that comforts but rarely convicts. They preach blessing without repentance, breakthrough without surrender, and favor without faithfulness.
The prosperity gospel is perhaps the most visible form of this deception. It rebrands God as a cosmic vending machine: sow a seed, claim a promise, expect a check. Yet Scripture is clear — the cross comes before the crown. Jesus never promised luxury; He promised persecution (John 16:33). Paul rejoiced not in riches but in weakness, because it magnified the sufficiency of Christ (2 Corinthians 12:9–10).
Worse still, spiritual authority is increasingly measured by social media clout rather than sound doctrine. Paul warned against such pride: “They are conceited and understand nothing. They have an unhealthy craving for controversy and for quarrels about words” (1 Timothy 6:4). And in verse 5, he exposes the motive: “who imagine that godliness is a means of gain.”
Indeed, the modern phony pastor turns the holy into hustle. But ministry was never meant to be monetized. Jesus drove out the money changers from the temple (Matthew 21:12–13), not because commerce was bad, but because it corrupted sacred space.
The Consequences of Counterfeit Christianity
The damage false shepherds inflict is far-reaching. Believers wounded by manipulation often walk away from the faith entirely, unable to distinguish between the counterfeit and the real. The credibility of the Church is eroded. The name of Christ is blasphemed among unbelievers — not because of the message of the Gospel, but because of the messengers who misrepresent it (Romans 2:24).
As Jesus said, “You will recognize them by their fruits” (Matthew 7:16). If a ministry produces arrogance, entitlement, abuse, or greed, it is not from the Spirit of God. Galatians 5:22-23 makes this plain: the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control — not opulence, ego, and exploitation.
What Must the Church Do?
The Church must awaken to this reality and respond not with passive tolerance but with prophetic truth. Discernment is not optional — it is essential. Leaders must be tested (1 John 4:1). Theology must matter again. Seminaries must train not just preachers, but pastors — men and women who are shepherds at heart, not CEOs in disguise.
Congregations, too, have a role. Christians must learn to measure sermons by Scripture, not style. Is the Word rightly divided (2 Timothy 2:15)? Is Christ exalted, or is the preacher simply performing? Is the cross central, or is the focus self-help, success, and slogans?
Ultimately, the role of a true pastor is not to build an audience, but to build disciples. Not to create dependency on their platform, but to equip the saints for the work of ministry (Ephesians 4:12).
A Call to Courage and Clarity
The time has come to stop mistaking charisma for calling. It’s time for the Church to lovingly, boldly, and biblically expose the wolves — not to shame them for sport, but to protect the sheep and restore the health of the fold.
Let us remember: the Good Shepherd laid down His life for the sheep (John 10:11). Any shepherd unwilling to do the same is unworthy of the title.
Vikiho Kiba
Unity Village, 5th Mile Chümoukedima

In an age where charisma often trumps character and showmanship overshadows spiritual substance, the Church finds itself grappling with a sobering crisis: the rise of the false shepherd.
