The Nagaland State Commission for Protection of Child Rights<\/strong> (NSCPCR) organized an awareness programme on child rights at the Village Council Hall in Sech\u00fc-Z\u00fcbza<\/strong> on April 30. The event emphasized the collective responsibility of communities, institutions, and individuals in safeguarding children\u2019s welfare and ensuring their protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to a DIPR <\/strong>report, in his keynote address, NSCPCR chairman Alun Hangsing expressed gratitude to the participants for their commitment to child welfare. He highlighted the importance of grassroots awareness and stressed that child protection should be a key developmental priority, involving coordinated efforts between governments, communities, families, and individuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hangsing further underscored the dangers posed by modern technology, noting that the widespread use of mobile phones makes children vulnerable to harmful content at an early age. He urged attendees to apply the insights from such awareness programs within their families and communities to ensure lasting impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Addressing the gathering, Sech\u00fc-Z\u00fcbza SDO (Civil), Imliakum Sanglir, reiterated the importance of child rights amid evolving societal dynamics. While acknowledging the strong traditional and church-based support in rural areas, he pointed out that cases of child abuse are rising in urban environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He emphasized the need for schools and parents to cultivate safe spaces for children, shaping their awareness of rights and responsibilities.
The programme featured thematic presentations on critical child protection laws, providing detailed explanations of legal frameworks safeguarding children\u2019s rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NSCPCR member Aying Wangsha introduced the Right to Education (RTE) Act, explaining its role in ensuring free and compulsory education for children aged 6 to 14. She outlined significant mandates, including neighborhood schooling, a ban on capitation fees, prohibition of corporal punishment, and non-discriminatory admissions. She also highlighted the essential role of School Management Committees (SMCs) in maintaining accountability within the education system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Member Akumla Longchari provided an in-depth presentation on the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. She explained the different forms of sexual abuse covered under the law and detailed the support mechanisms available for victims and their families, including FIR filing, free medical assistance, counselling, shelter, compensation, continued education, and rehabilitation services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Legal consultant Lichani Murry elaborated on the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, which criminalizes child cruelty, labor, begging, exploitation, and drug-related offenses involving minors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She emphasized that the Act prevents children from being placed in jail lock-ups, protects them from the death penalty, and prioritizes rehabilitation through structured reintegration programs. Additionally, she outlined adoption procedures regulated by the Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA) and the State Adoption Resource Agency (SARA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n


District Child Protection Officer (DCPO) Kohima, Sekho Dawhou, presented an overview of child protection efforts in the district, highlighting the role of the Child Welfare Committee (CWC). Between April 2024 and March 2025, the committee handled various cases, including instances of child labor, physical and sexual abuse, counseling, rehabilitation, and legal assistance.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
