At a local level, civic authorities in Nagaland, particularly in Kohima and Dimapur, must prioritize efforts to achieve a cleaner and healthier environment. Recent months have seen alarming images of garbage accumulating in various colonies across Dimapur published in local news. These unsightly scenes reflect a greater issue that calls for immediate attention and reorientation of civic priorities. The response time from civic authorities has been disappointing. The reaction time for clearing garbage has been agonizingly slow and at times nothing is done for days on end. What is more worrying is that despite existing bans on polythene bags, garbage piles remain vibrant in color, serving as a stark reminder of waste mismanagement. Garbage should never be allowed to blend into the landscape, nor should it become a breeding ground for pests and a repository for decaying food. The continued use and of polythene bags and other plastic products severely disrupts the ecosystem. Their non-biodegradable nature impacts soil fertility, contaminates essential nutrients, and poses threats to drinking water quality. Furthermore, these materials can contribute to the irreversible choking of our rivers and drainage systems. Studies indicate that food, such as fish and meat, wrapped in polythene can generate heat that leads to toxic radiation, rendering the food unsafe for consumption. Moreover, polythene-wrapped products can become infected with anaerobic bacteria, which have been linked to diseases such as skin infections and cancer. In addition to these health risks, discarded polythene bags near homes create ideal breeding sites for mosquitoes, increasing the likelihood of dengue fever and other life-threatening diseases. It is imperative for civic authorities to recognize the dangers of neglecting these modern hazards and to implement swift measures to eliminate unsightly garbage piles and enforce existing regulations against harmful substances. While cities elsewhere have successfully adopted recycling programs for years, Dimapur urgently needs to prioritize similar initiatives. Another pressing issue is the discharge of effluents into already clogged drains, resulting in stagnant water. This situation fosters conditions conducive to mosquito breeding. The drains of Dimapur have faced decades of neglect, leading to their redundancy and in some cases, complete disappearance due to encroachment.Civic authorities must increase their efforts to clean public spaces, including drains, streams, markets, and roadways, where garbage often collects. Waste disposal has escalated into a significant concern for many towns in the state, particularly Dimapur, where litter can be seen along roadsides and in public areas. To tackle this, it is crucial to triple the number of sweepers and cleaners engaging in contract work to enhance cleanliness efforts.Public involvement is also critical; residents must be held accountable for littering, and local ward chairmen should be educated about the matter. Merely imposing penalties may help discourage littering, but a broader cultural shift toward cleanliness is necessary. Maintaining clean towns requires dedicated effort, resources, and manpower. Fostering awareness and engagement within the community will help create a healthier environment, which is essential for the overall well-being of society.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
Global awareness holds little significance without actionable steps toward environmental protection.
