In a coordinated humanitarian effort, the Delhi Eastern Nagaland Students\u2019 Union (DENSU) successfully facilitated the safe return of 32 individuals from Eastern Nagaland who were found stranded under exploitative and inhumane conditions in Lapthal, Uttarakhand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a press note, DENSU president Alun L Khiungru and general secretary Lumsela Sangtam said that the group, originally recruited with promises of employment as road construction workers in Maharashtra, was instead taken to an isolated site in Uttarakhand where they were left without jobs, documentation, wages, or basic necessities since March 21, 2025. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Most of them were first-time migrants from remote villages\u2014 Tangnyu (9), Longwa (16), Phomching (5), Nokyan (1), and Yuching (1)\u2014with no familiarity with city life or its systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When they arrived in Delhi on May 9, exhausted, malnourished, and financially drained, DENSU said it promptly stepped in to provide temporary shelter, food, water and safe accommodation at Nagaland House, New Delhi. The individuals were then sent back to Nagaland via Brahmaputra Mail that very night (May 9 at 11:40 PM), ensuring that each person boarded the correct compartment from Old Delhi Railway Station.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
DENSU acknowledged the swift support from Wennyei Konyak, deputy commissioner, Mon; Sharon Longchari, joint resident commissioner, Nagaland House, Delhi; Dr. Hentok Phom, joint director, H&FW, consultant for Naga Patients, and DENSU advisor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The union also thanked Loipong Konyak, senior advisor DENSU; Kheizo, Nagaland House Kitchen (for extra food); Abel Sumi for voluntary logistical assistance. DENSU also expressed special gratitude to for financial and moral contributions to K. Konngam Konyak, advisor, Art & Culture; Phangnon Konyak, MP (Rajya Sabha); C.L. John, minister Environment, Forest & Climate Change; Sharon Longchari and Yingphe Konyak, president ENWO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
DENSU called the incident a sobering reminder of the perils posed by unverified job recruitment.
