Confederation of Nagaland Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CNCCI) Tuesday announced the launching of an \u201cindefinite voluntary business shutdown\u201d across nine districts in Nagaland starting May 19, 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This was announced at a press conference following the induction of the new executive council, under incumbent chairman Dr. Khekugha Muru who was re-elected chairman for the 2025\u20132030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On the demand for nominees for representation in Urban Local Bodies (ULBs), Muru said that there has been some communication gap between the demands put forth by the nine district chambers to the government of Nagaland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said that over four years, the CNCCI has written to the chief secretary, chief minister, deputy chief minister and the advisor for urban development and municipal affairs on several occasions, clearly stating that nominee representation from CNCCI in the nine districts in the ULB was a non-negotiable demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Muru said representatives were nominated to Kohima and Mokokchung, but other major districts such as Dimapur, despite being a commercial hub, were left out. He stated that if the government decided not to nominate DCCI representatives in all districts, then it should have refrained from appointing any, but instead it nominated only for two districts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
CNCCI president said the district members have decided to call for \u201cdemocratic indefinite voluntary business shutter down\u201d in the nine districts including Dimapur, Ch\u00fcmoukedima, Niuland, Zunheboto, Meluri, Phek, Wokha, Peren, and Tseminyu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said that even the Rajya Sabha includes nominated members from business and economic backgrounds.Thus being key stakeholders in urban areas through trade licenses, sanitation fees, and more, chambers of commerce should also have representation in ULBs to contribute meaningfully to community development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said business representation in ULBs would also be able to check the regulatory inconsistencies, syndicate systems, and arbitrary levies outside the mandate of GST and municipal acts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Muru stated that CNCCI had initially requested business community representation in every town council, but the government suggested limiting it to districts in the first phase, to which they agreed to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, after the ULB elections, only Mokokchung and Kohima were accommodated, leaving nine other districts out. Muru said this \u201cunequal treatment has caused resentment,\u201d and the chambers, therefore, urged the government to apply the same standard across all districts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He also insisted that the shutter down was \u201cnot anti-government or against the government\u201d, but simply an exercise of democratic right to express displeasure. Muru said the band would not affect essential services like medicines, fuel, or schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Meanwhile the newly elected members of CNCCI for the 2025\u20132030 tenure included three vice chairpersons: Dr. Seyievilie Mor, Jabou Sekhose . Dorothy Chang and Avi Chase have been elected as general secretary, with Tsalichum S. Sangtam and Kekhrieletuo Kelio as secretaries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
