Nagaland home minister, Imkong L. Imchen reasserted that taxes reportedly imposed and collected by various underground factions were \u201cnot taxation but extortion.\u201d\nHe made the statement in response to a question by media persons at a press briefing in the office of the SP Dimapur after holding a consultative meeting on law and order in Dimapur. Others who attended the consultative meeting included home commissioner, Mr. M Kithan, DGP Mr. K Kire, ADG (Ops)Mr. G K Rengma, IG(R) Mr. N N Ngullie, DIG (R\/ Trg\/ Bor), Mr. Jongpong, DC Dimapur Maong Aier, SP Dimapur Lirimo Lotha besides other police officers.
\nThe home minister also acknowledged that the state government did not expect quick results in rooting out extortion but was confident of containing it. Imchen also expressed appreciation to the Dimapur Police for doing a \u201ccommendable job\u201d in handling the law and order situation. He however said that containing law and order problem would not be possible without the help and cooperation of the citizens and society.
\nImchen also regretted that municipal tax collection by the DMC was not properly accounted and regulated. He clarified that though the DMC was authorized to collect taxes as provisioned under the Nagaland Municipal Act, 2001, there was need for streamlining.
\nThe minister also sent out a strong message against illegal taxation in cash some departments and directed that all tax be through treasury challan. He expressed concern that such taxes collected were not reaching the respective department. The home minister also said no organization was authorized to impose or collect any form of tax.
\nImchen said that various issues related to DMC and LPG distribution were also discussed at the consultative meeting. He admitted that the shortage of traffic constable and women police personnel in Dimapur was an urgent requirement.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
